Eight DHS track members met the qualifying standards for the 2008 MSTCA Coaches Invitational held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston last week. Eight DHS track members met the qualifying standards for the 2008 MSTCA Coaches Invitational held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston last week. Senior Mike Vercollone was the top performer for the Dragons, winning his qualifying heat in the 55-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.32 (personal best). He followed that with another personal best (:08.30) when he won his semifinal heat with the third best time. In the finals, Vercollone was battling for a podium finish with the leaders and stumbled on the second to last hurdle, ending up eighth in a field of 57.{sidebar id=4} Senior Kelly Murphy was the top female finisher for the Dragons, throwing the shot-put 30’ 9.75” for an eighth-place finish out of 37 competitors. Other Duxbury participants who established personal bests were senior Nick Beattie in the 55-meter dash with an 11-place finish in a time of :06.83, freshman Julia Nee in the 300-meters with a time of :45.09, and freshman Jon McKinley with a time of 4:44 in the mile. Junior Tracy Clough (55-meters/:08.22) and senior Tom Fiset (55-meter hurdles/:08.78) also ran. Last week the girls also benefited from a correction in a clerical error from their meet with Silver Lake. The girls were awarded the meet with a score of 51-49, moving their record to 5-3, while the boys are right behind at 4-3. {sidebar id=1} Seven DHS athletes qualified for this Saturday’s Division III State Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center and they include: Beattie (55-meters/:06.83 and long jump/18’11.75”), Vercollone (55-meter hurdles/:08.30 and 300-meter :39.1), McKinley (mile/5:44, 1000-meters/2:49 and 2-mile/10:24), Fiset (55-meters hurdles/:08.56), Nee (high jump/5’0”), Murphy (shot put/31’0.25”) and Nee (300-meters/:44.2). The Patriot League All-Stars were also announced and Beattie, Murphy, and junior Shane DiBona made the team, while Tom Perekslis and Cam Poole won the Sportsmanship Awards. |
