Lady Dragons back on track

The DHS girls’ hockey team got back to form on Sunday night at the Gallo Arena in Bourne with a convincing 5-0 win over No. 8-seeded Archbishop Williams of Braintree.

After Marissa Fichter saved the team on Friday afternoon with her winning goal in the final minutes of their victory over Walpole, sophomore Jane Dudley eliminated the drama right away by scoring just over a minute into the game to give her teammates a 1-0 lead.

Picking up a loose puck behind the Williams net, Dudley came out to the goalie’s left and fired her shot through the legs of Ashley Dellaire for what proved to be the game-winner.

The Lady Dragons dominated play throughout the first period against the Bishops and had numerous scoring chances, including one goal that was disallowed when the officials ruled Duxbury redirected the puck with a skate. Little did they know that the shot deflected off a Williams defender and trickled through the legs of Dellaire.

Despite their dominance, Duxbury was always a shot away from being tied up after the first period.

The Lady Dragons started the second period buzzing the Williams defensive zone and drew a power-play opportunity at the 10:14 mark. It took just 24 seconds for Duxbury to up its lead to 2-0 when senior captain Hannah Murphy whipped a wrist shot from the left boards into the far corner for an insurance goal.

The Bishops were still in the game despite the score when the third period started. But less than three minutes later Williams’ chances for a comeback appeared to go down the drain when Dudley scored her second of the night after picking up a rebound and finding a wide open net in front of her to make it 3-0.

It was all Duxbury the rest of the way, as the Falmouth girls’ hockey team lost interest in cheering for the Bishops from the Williams’ side of the stands.

With seven minutes left in the game, an historic moment in the brief history of the DHS girls’ program happened when Murphy lifted a backhander from between the face-off circles and beat Dellaire for her 200th career point and a 4-0 Duxbury lead.

Meredith Wright would put the finishing touches on the win when she scored a power-play goal with 1:33 on

the clock to cap the 5-0 victory.

“Williams played a strong game and they took away the middle of the ice in the early going,” said Duxbury Coach Friend Weiler. “That early goal kind of ignited us. The communication and cycling were much better tonight than is was on Friday night and I think the girls had a lot more energy.”

Weiler was also effusive in his praise of Murphy and her accomplishment.

“I just can’t say enough about Hannah,” said Weiler. “She’s just been a terrific player from the moment she stepped into our program. She’s a high energy and high character kid who makes all the players around her better. She’s a wonderful kid and a wonderful athlete.”

The Lady Dragons will now take on the winner of Methuen/Tewsbury or Gardner/St. Bernard’s on Saturday at the Gallo Arena with a time to be announced.
