The DHS boys’ hockey team kept its unbeaten streak alive. But it wasn’t very impressive in the process when it allowed the North Quincy Red Raiders to score in the final 22 seconds and earn a 1-1 tie with the Dragons. Playing on the new ice surface at The Bog, both teams battled water-soaked ice and out-of-alignment boards that made clearing passes around the perimeter a guessing game about where they would land.

It didn’t take long for favored Duxbury to get on the board when senior defenseman Tucker Hannon got the puck at the right point and wristed a shot on net where it caught junior goaltender Nolan Greene by surprise.

Despite the early Duxbury lead, the Red Raiders held their own with the Dragons for the remainder of the period, as Coach John Blake’s squad couldn’t take advantage of a 13-5 shot differential.

As has been the case on many occasions this season, the Dragons had many opportunities to put some distance between themselves and the Red Raiders, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

In the second half of the middle stanza, Duxbury had four chances to up its lead, only to have Greene hold his ground and keep the deficit at one.

With 8:49 to go, junior forward Trevor O’Brien crossed through the slot and around the NQ defense, firing a shot on Greene. A minute later sophomore Luke Stevens came barreling down the left side and bore down on the Red Raider net with the netminder flashing his glove for the save.

The most serious bid came with 4:28 remaining when Stevens came down the right side and sent a crossing pass to a rushing Shawn Errasti, who was robbed by Greene as he sprawled to his right.

The pumped up Dragons were at it again 30 seconds later when Bobby and Trevor O’Brien combined with Mike Doyle for a 3-on-1 that failed to convert, leaving Duxbury with a mere one-goal margin at the end of the second period.

The third period was uneventful, as both teams fought off shorthanded situations until 1:15 remained and North Quincy called a timeout to pull its goaltender. With an empty net staring them in the face, the Dragons couldn’t get possession and the Red Raiders stormed the net with junior forward Andrew Currie knocking home a loose puck in a scramble in front of senior goalie Chris Johnson.

“We just seemed to have a lack of energy all week long, even in the Hanover game, and tonight wasn’t a game we deserved to win,” said Blake bluntly. “We’re not happy with the way we are playing right now and we’ll have to look at maybe making some changes.”
