Senior wrestling captains Brian Leddie (152) and Jake Genereux (182) won their respective championships at the Whitman-Hanson Tournament on Saturday.  For Genereux, it was his second title at the 13-team invitational, winning last year in the 152-pound weight class.  For Leddie, the championship was even sweeter after finishing fourth last year at 145.

With the excessive bleeding now under control, Leddie went on to record a 19-3 technical fall over Silver Lake’s Rob Kirkland in the quarterfinals, and then a 11-3 major decision over Southeastern’s Nick Drago in the semi-finals.

That set up a rematch with Plymouth North senior captain Bryson Litvay in the finals. Litvay beat Leddie recently at the Marshfield Holiday Tournament with a close 5-3 decision. The match looked to be another nail biter with neither wrestler able to score a takedown in the first period.  The second period started with Leddie on top, but Litvay escaped from the bottom position to take a 1-0 lead.  However, Leddie would return the favor in the third period with an escape of his own, tying the score at 1-1.  Just when the match looked as if would be heading for overtime, Duxbury senior captain caught Litvay in a head and arm, taking him down to his back for a thrilling 6-1 victory, and the championship.

Duxbury senior co-captain Jake Genereux was equal to the task.  Ranked fourth in the state, Genereux was the odds-on favorite to win the 182-pound championship going into the tournament, and he did not disappoint.  The senior captain pinned his way to the finals, but Southeastern senior captain Brendan McCune, who wrestled at 195 last season, proved to be a worthy opponent in the finals.

Genereux set the tone early with a two-point takedown before putting McCune on his back for a 6-0 lead. The Southeastern senior captain was tough to keep down, and earned a one-point escape at the end of the first period. With the score 6-1 to start the second period, McCune chose an optional start, giving up one point rather than a possible two.  The score would remain 7-1 at the end of the second period.  Genereux chose bottom to start the third period and quickly escaped.  Determined to keep the match out of reach, the Duxbury senior captain earned a hard-fought takedown, keeping his feet in bounds while at the same time maintaining control of his opponent.  However, McCune would get another point on an illegal hold.  Not happy with the referee’s call, Genereux worked to get an arm bar on McCune for a possible pinning combination, but with the protest of the Southeastern coaches who thought the hold was potentially dangerous, the referee blew the whistle and awarded McCune another point.  Despite the questionable calls against him, Genereux won the gold with a 10-3 decision.

Junior Jim Chappuis finished in fourth place in the 138-pound weight class.  After pinning Weymouth’s Liam Naughton and Plymouth North’s Leif Burgess, Chappuis lost a major decision to the eventual champion, CJ Botello, in the semi-finals. Another win in the consolation semis, gave Chappuis a chance at a rematch with Brockton senior Hans Geffrard and a possible bronze medal.

The match did not start well for the Duxbury junior with Geffrard getting the first takedown for an early 2-0 lead.  However, the score would remain the same at the end of the first period.  Geffrard chose neutral to start the second period, but the decision backfired with Chappuis getting a takedown, tying the match up at 2-2.  With no lead change going into the third period, Geffrard chose the down position, and was awarded a point for an illegal hold by Chappuis.  With the Duxbury junior working legs on top to try to turn the Brockton senior, Chappuis got hit with another costly point on an illegal figure-four hold with his legs. The match would end with Geffrard getting the win with a 4-2 decision. 

As a team, Duxbury finished in the middle of the pack with senior Nick Kates (106) finishing in sixth place after suffering a shoulder injury in the consolation semis.  Kates had two pins prior to his first loss. Freshmen Patrick Quilty also chipped in with two pins in the 106-pound weight class, Ben Sanchez recorded two pins in the 126-pound weight class, and Hal Mosher had a pin at 182.  Sophomore Kyle Auer earned a major decision over South Shore Voch Tech’s David Ruseau and a 5-2 decision over Silver Lake’s Aidan Bertrom to round out the scoring for Duxbury.

The Dragon grapplers will head to Quincy on Wednesday night at 7p.m. for a league match.
