The Duxbury High School Varsity Football program has a long tradition of excellence, and its 37-1 record over the past three seasons would certainly indicate that this winning culture is as strong as ever. But Head Coach Dave Maimaron has always demanded more of his players than just a commitment on the field. He also insists that they be good people, devoted teammates and generous citizens of the community. League titles and Superbowl Championships speak volumes to the team’s on-field commitment, but their work in the community speaks equally well to the players’ buy-in to their coach’s overall philosophy. Honored last year by both the Town of Duxbury and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association with their respective “Community Service Awards,” the Dragons have developed a reputation for giving back, and that charity continued in 2013. This season, the DHS Football team “adopted” the Best Buddies program (an organization focused on the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities) as its charity of choice. In addition to hosting a variety of fundraising events to benefit Best Buddies, each week, the team invited a group of Buddies to participate in the game day experience with the team, including representing the team (along with the team captains) in the pre-game coin toss, standing on the sideline throughout the game and participating in the post-game hand shake with the opposing players.Dragon charity did not stop there. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the players sold pink Duxbury Football t-shirts throughout the month of October. As a result of their extraordinary efforts, the team was able to donate over $5,600 to the Dana Farber Mammography Outreach Van. This van brings mammography screening and education to the neighborhoods of Boston and surrounding areas providing critical services to people who otherwise might never receive them. The Dragon’s donation will cover almost 40 mammograms. Through its off-the-field efforts, the DHS Football team has made an even greater impact on their community. |
