(Ian Ikeda on board his single-handed boat, the laser.) Ian Ikeda, a recent graduate of Duxbury High School and former Varsity Co-Captain of the Duxbury High School Sailing Team, also sails the single-handed boat, the laser. Ikeda has been training part-time with elite coach Brett Davis at Laser Gold Sailing in Clearwater, Fl. since the fall High School Nationals Regatta in 2010, when he placed 17th out of 18 boats. Ian almost gave up sailing but formed a training partnership with Davis and has been working with him for the past two years. Ikeda’s accomplishments in the laser this year include: second at the Healy High School Regionals 2011; fourth at the Cressy High School Nationals 2011; thirteenth at 2012 Canadian Championships, fourteenth at 2012 North American Championships at Columbia Gorge, Oregon; sixth at 2012 US Championships in Houston, first at 2012 Hyannis Regatta; and first at Buzzard’s Bay International Laser Class Division 7. Ian is ranked third on the US and Canadian Grand Prix International Laser Class Regatta Schedule.
Ikeda’s sailing career began in the Optimist at Duxbury Bay Maritime School when he was 8-years-old. When he was 12, he eagerly learned to sail the overpowered single handed boat, the laser, and spent two summers at the Stamford Yacht Club sailing with world class sailor and coach, Rob Coutts, and two summers at Rochester Yacht Club sailing with former DBMS Sailing Director, Jon Faudree. Ikeda takes his sailing very seriously and is one of the top ranked junior (18 years and under) laser sailors in the country. He will be taking a year off from college to train full-time with Davis with the goal of becoming the top ranked junior laser sailor in 2013, and one of the top ten ranked men in the country. |
