The DHS girls’ softball team broke open a tight game in their tournament opener with No. 9 seed East Bridgewater to win 7-2 over the Vikings on Thursday afternoon in Duxbury.

The game was scoreless after three innings with both teams squandering scoring opportunities. Duxbury would break the scoreless affair in the fourth inning on a walk to Christina Curley, who then reached second when Caroline McSherry reached first on an infield error.  A double steal put runners on second and third base, allowing Curley to score on an infield groundout. Duxbury scored again in the fifth to make it a 2-0 game, but EB would close the margin with a run in the top of the sixth inning.

In bottom of the sixth inning Duxbury’s bats came to life, as Coach Rod Laniewski’s squad sent 10 batters to the plate scoring five runs on four hits and four walks. EB would add a run in the seventh inning to close out the Duxbury victory.

Alex Leaverton and senior co-captain Madi Duddy had two hits apiece, while Duxbury’s junior pitcher Micaela Lannon surrendered only four hits and had five strikeouts.

No. 8 seeded Duxbury advances to the Division 2 South quarterfinals with a possible matchup with No. 1 seed Abington.
