Sailors continue to impress

The Duxbury High School sailing team continued its stellar season with a second-place finish at the State championships last Wednesday at the recently updated MIT Sailing Pavilion on the Charles River.

The races were sailed in Fireflys, a boat much different than past years. The Firefly is very popular in Europe and was non-existent in the US until MIT bought a fleet of 20 this spring. Throughout the day the Dragons did their best to dissect the new boats and the tricky conditions that the Charles River is well known for. The team had a strong start and was near the top of the scoreboard all day, but at the end of the regatta the team finished one-point behind BC High and a State title.

Sailing well for the Dragons were captain Ian Ikeda, captain Alec Stewart, Meg Mackinnon, Hanno Kite-Powell, Sydney Connor, Alex Palfrey and Aaron Klein.

The previous weekend this same group of sailors, along with sophomore Kevin Coakley traveled to Connecticut College to compete in the New England Team Racing Championship. The team finished 5th in the event and qualified for the Atlantic Coast Championships which were held at the Wianno Yacht Club this past weekend.

The event will showcase some of the top team-racing groups east of the Mississippi River and will include many of the same teams they battled just a few weeks ago at the National Championship in Seattle. This will certainly be another good test to see how the Dragons compare against some of the nation’s best.
