And people think Duxbury fans are obnoxious. With their girls’ lacrosse team coming in undefeated at 4-0-1, fans of the Cohasset High School squad were expecting big things, like a win over the 4-3-1 Lady Dragons.

They expressed their feelings from the opening face-off and it never ceased, annoying spectators and officials alike, as the Lady Dragons ruined their afternoon with a 14-8 win over the Skippers on Friday afternoon in Duxbury. While things were nip and tuck throughout the first half, the Lady Dragons were able to pull away at the end of the first 25 minutes with a 7-4 lead.

When the second half started the Lady Dragons put their foot on the gas when Lily Smith picked off a Cohasset pass and raced downfield to score just over two minutes into the half to make it 8-4.

Hannah Murphy followed 30 seconds later with a goal off a free position, and Katy Smith upped the lead to 10-4 when she cut across the crease to beat the Skipper netminder.

Duxbury continued to build its lead when Murphy scored again on a rebound of a Meg Zaverucha shot and it appeared Duxbury was in complete control. But the undefeated Skippers battled back and put a scare in the Lady Dragons, as they ripped off four straight goals in just over three minutes to narrow the gap to 11-8 with 15:30 left in the game.

It was time to kill Cohasset’s momentum and Coach Kelly Jurgens called a timeout to get her troops settled.

The break seemed to work, as the Lady Dragons came out and scored 48 seconds later when senior midfielder Emily Horton took a pass from Katie Smith to make it 12-8.

It was now time to take some time off the clock and Duxbury did it to perfection, as six minutes elapsed before the Lady Dragons poked a hole in the sinking Cohasset ship. State track champion and starting defender Emily Doyle took off from her backend position and raced untouched down the middle of the field, firing her shot into the Cohasset net for a 13-8 lead with 8:20 remaining.

Duxbury continued to work the clock to the aggravation of Cohasset, and with 4:27 to go Tina Balzotti converted a series of passes from the Zaverucha sisters that buried the Skippers for good.

“That was a great team effort,” said Coach Jurgens. “I finally was able to get a full 50 minutes out of them.”

The girls will face a test on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 when they entertain Division 1 powerhouse Framingham, who is in the middle of an off-season with a 3-5 record.
