Tennis highs and lows

The Duxbury boys’ tennis team split a pair of matches during opening week action, disposing of Marshfield, 5-0, and taking it on the chin against Cape Cod Academy, 4-1.

Senior Peter Muncey (6-1/6-0) barely broke a sweat at No. 1 singles, while classmate Connor O’Keefe (6-0/6-0) was even more efficient at No. 2 singles at Marshfield. Freshman Fred Clifford made his debut a sparkling one as he cruised to a 6-1/6-0 win at No. 3.

The first doubles pairing of senior Erik Schneider and junior Kevin Coakley kept up the pace for the Dragons with a 6-1/6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles, while juniors Will Triebel and Dan McHugh entertained their teammates for the rest of the afternoon by coming back from a 4-6 first-set loss to defeat Ian Crittenden and Jack Hunkler 6-3/6-3.

In a complete turn-around on Thursday, Clifford was the only victorious player for the Dragons, as he knocked off rookie Vito Flavo, 6-3/6-4, at No. 3 singles.

Muncey had his hands full with freshman Patrick Wyeth, coming out on the losing end of  a pair of 6-2 sets, while O’Keefe won his first set over Will White, 7-5, then watched White rally with 6-1/6-3 wins to capture the No. 2 slot.

The Dragons kept their hopes alive when Schneider and Coakley won the first set at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, but faded in the final two sets with 6-0/6-3 losses.

Sophomore Harry Sohmer and Triebel were bounced early at No. 2 doubles, 6-1/6-1.

After yesterday’s match in Quincy, the Dragons will entertain Silver Lake on Thursday afternoon at 3:45 p.m.
