Findley is ESPN Boston Miss Hockey
By Mike Halloran

ESPNBoston.com and its High School section announced that Duxbury Dragons’ senior captain and defenseman Martha Findley is the recipient of its second annual “Miss Hockey” award, presented annually to the top female high school hockey player in Massachusetts.

Findley helped Duxbury to back-to-back Division II state titles in 2011 and 2012 and was part of a blue-line group that held the opposition to just 21 goals in 23 games this year. The Miss Hockey Award winner was chosen by a panel of experts made up of ESPNBoston.com staff, correspondents and high school hockey coaches. Findley will be presented with the award at a later date.

“Martha Findley is that most rare kind of defenseman that is equally adept stepping up in the rush as she is taking care of the defensive end,” said Scott Barboza, co-editor of ESPN Boston High Schools and coordinator of the site’s hockey coverage. “Widely regarded as the best defensemen in the state for the last two seasons, she leaves behind quite a legacy at Duxbury that includes two state championships.”

Findley tallied five goals and 21 assists for 26 points this season. She also posted a goal and four assists during the Dragons’ four playoff games and helped the team to a +104 goal differential.

“She’s a quintessential puck-moving defenseman with great vision,” Dragons’ head coach Friend Weiler said. “Plus, she has that quick burst of speed that gives her separation from most girls. She’s done anything we’ve asked of her during her career, and more than that, she really works hard at it.”

Findley, who was also a standout on the Dragons’ Div. I South champion field hockey team, plans to attend Cushing Academy for a postgraduate year. She is also a member of the Assabet Valley girls’ hockey travel team.

“In her four years, Martha was a part of four state semifinals games and won two state championships,” Weiler said. “She’s a leader on the ice and she leads by example.”
