Junior Michela North had the biggest game of her high school career on Friday night in Duxbury’s 63-52 win over North Quincy, clinching the Keenan Division title for the Lady Dragons with her stellar performance.

Closing in on the 1000-point mark of her high school career, the Patriot League All-Star scored 31 points, grabbed 19 rebounds, blocked seven shots and dished out three assists in the deciding game, raising Duxbury’s record to 10-6 overall and 8-2 in the Patriot League. It is the team’s ninth win in its last 10 games.

The win was also achieved with the help of junior guard Kate Norton, who has made rapid progress since recovering from knee surgery and dished out 14 assists, continually finding North underneath and leading her to the basket on many occasions.

The spectacular performance was the second in a row for the talented forward, who led the Lady Dragons to a 50-38 win over Silver Lake earlier in the week with 22 points, 10 rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists.

Norton was once again a big contributor against the Lakers, as she added to her point guard duties by burying a pair of three-pointers in front of the Silver Lake bench late in the game to put the visitors away.

Senior tri-captain Shannon McLaughlin contributed to a big night at the foul line for Duxbury, as she was flawless at the free throw line by sinking six in six attempts, while her teammates went 11 for 15.

“This team is really exceeding my expectations,” said Coach Bob Sullivan. “The biggest thing we have going for us right now is team chemistry and no team wins a championship without it.”

Sullivan was quick to praise the development and effort of freshmen Catherine Harrison and Maddie Foote.

“Catherine played the game of her life against North Quincy,” said Sullivan. “To be just 15 years old and go up against a physical player like Moya Umoren in a league-clinching game like that is unbelievable. She kept Moya off the glass and scored six points on top of it.

In the pressure-packed contest Sullivan also had enough confidence in Foote to put her in the game for the fourth quarter.

“When the game was on the line she had no turnovers, and she did the same thing against Silver Lake.”

After the victory Sullivan also presented game balls to juniors Heather Dorn and Meghan Sullivan for their enthusiasm and support for their teammates, especially during the second half.

“When the buzzer sounded, those two kids ran onto the floor and hugged Harrison for her efforts. They realized how big the freshman played for such an important game.”

The girls will tangle with perennial foe Whitman-Hanson on Thursday night in Duxbury at 6:30 p.m.
