Dragons stay in hunt for tourney berth

The boys’ hockey team looked like its chance at post-season play was headed in the wrong direction on Saturday afternoon when it took on a poor Quincy High team and trailed 1-0 midway through the third period.

“We were pretty much carrying the play in the first two periods, but their goalie (Peter Junta) was hot,” said Duxbury Coach John Blake. “Once we banged home that first one the flood gates opened.” The flood gates looked more like a tsunami as senior forward Fenton McCall tied the game with 8:05 left to play, and James Marcello potted the game-winner 22 seconds later.

The Dragons weren’t quite done yet as sophomore Nick Marrocco tallied an insurance goal 42 seconds later, followed by goals off the sticks of Seth Nichols and Cam Daley that finished off Duxbury’s five-goal explosion for a 5-1 win, raising its record to 6-6-4.

“After that first goal we got some confidence and we started shooting the puck and good things happened. But the big thing was that we didn’t panic,” said Blake. “After 30 minutes we were down and things weren’t going our way, but the guys stuck with the game plan and we had a good third period.”

Their playoff hopes now rest squarely in their own hands, as they face three Patriot League foes starting with Whitman-Hanson tonight, Silver Lake on Saturday, and Pembroke next Wednesday.

Three league wins would guarantee a .500 record and a tournament berth before the team heads off to the Cape Cod Classic on Feb. 18 against some of the Division 1 powers.
