Wrestlers head to States
By Wendy Genereux
Wednesday, February 08, 2012 09:00 AM

(Duxbury senior captain Bobby Boyle is flanked by head coach Kyle McCarthy and asst. coach Matt Jeffrey after winning the 220 lb. championship at the DII South Sectional wrestling tournament on Saturday.)

Apparently good things do come in small packages because the Duxbury HS wrestling team had only six wrestlers compete at the Division 2 South Sectional Individual Tournament on Saturday at Whitman-Hanson. Three of those grapplers punched their ticket to the state tournament that will be held at Reading Memorial High School on Friday and Saturday.

While senior captain Bobby Boyle (220 lbs.) was Duxbury’s lone champion with his 4-1 victory over North Attleboro senior Mike Anderson in the finals, juniors Jake Genereux and Owen Grey had to travel a tougher road to get to their finals, losing their semi-final matches and settling for bronze medals.

Boyle’s win was especially sweet because he was able to avenge an earlier loss to Anderson at the Marshfield Holiday Tournament. His victory came on the heels of a scare in the semi finals against Somerset sophomore Josh Louro, who was leading 4-3 late in the third period when Duxbury’s senior captain reversed the underclassman from the bottom position, for the come-from-behind win. Prior to the semi finals, Boyle recorded a first-round pin, and earned an 8-0 major decision over Stoughton’s Martin Petrie in the second round. The senior captain was elated after the tournament, as he will be competing at States for the first time in his three-year varsity wrestling career.

While Genereux will be heading to States for the third straight year, the Duxbury junior knows that nothing comes easy in the middleweights. Genereux faced Whitman-Hanson’s Jeff Bechen in the 152 lbs. semi-final, who was last year’s champion at 145. It would be the third time the two wrestlers met this season with Genereux winning the first two matches, including a pin in the finals of the W-H Invitational. Bechen was seeking revenge and he got it in an 11-9 battle in what turned out to be one of the best matches of the tournament. Unfortunately for Genereux, his hard luck at sectionals would continue, but once again he wrestled his way back to the podium with a technical fall over Nauset senior Jarrod Olson, and a 5-2 decision over North Attleboro sophomore Austin Renzi for third place.

Fellow junior Owen Grey had one of the toughest match-ups in the semi-finals when he took the mat against Stoughton senior captain Andrew Paredes, who is currently ranked second in the state at heavy weight. Grey was not intimidated by Paredes’ reputation as he battled the Stoughton star from start to finish, coming up on the short end of a 5-2 decision. Grey would go on to pin his Sharon opponent, and survived an 8-4 decision over an undersized Ben Allegria of North Attleboro en route to his first trip to States, and another third-place finish for Duxbury.

While sophomore Jim Chappuis just missed qualifying for the state tournament, he did take home a medal, coming in sixth place with two wins in the 132 lb. weight class.
