Individual performances spark wrestlers
By Wendy Genereux

With the Duxbury wrestling team losing yet another grappler to a concussion last Wednesday night at home against Pembroke, it would be easy for the team and its coaches to throw in the towel. Instead, they have taken the high road, focusing more on individual performances. On senior night in Duxbury, two underclassmen; sophomores Jimmy Chappuis and Pat Shaw, along with junior Jake Genereux, stole the show in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The trio had three consecutive pins at 132, 138, and 152, tying the match up at 18-18. Unfortunately for the hosts, that is all they could muster against a strong Pembroke team. In a heated battle in the 220 lb. weight class, senior captain Bobby Boyle lost a hard-fought match in triple overtime to the Titan’s Eddie Hean.

On Saturday the Dragons hosted their annual Duxbury Team Tournament featuring teams from Central Catholic, New Bedford, Somerset, Nauset, Plymouth North, Cohasset, and Carver.

Last year Duxbury was the runner-up, losing a close match to New Bedford in the finals. But with only six healthy wrestlers taking the mat, the Dragons would once again focus on individual performances. Wrestling well for Duxbury despite losing were freshman Kyle Auer, who nearly pinned Nauset’s Bubba Kaplan and Jim Chappuis, who put a scare in Cohasset senior captain Gus Helbock when he came close to pinning him in the second period. Bobby Boyle pinned both his Nauset and Plymouth North opponents, while Jake Genereux went 3-0 on the day, including an impressive 13-0 major decision over senior Derek Froio of Cohasset, who is currently ranked among the best 152-pounders in the state.

The Dragons will finish out the regular season with a Patriot League match at Hingham on Wednesday night before the individual South Sectional tournament on Saturday at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School.
