Girls continue dominance

The Duxbury girls’ swim team remains unbeaten this week after easily defeating Middleboro, 82-52, at the Henry B. Burkland pool in Middleboro last Tuesday.

The Lady Dragons took the top spot in nine out of 11 events, including winning each of the relay events.  Behind the nine total victories were sweeps in six out of eight individual events. Ellie Johnson led the girls with wins in both the 200-yard IM (2:25.87) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.66).  Finishing the sweep in the 200 IM were Jill Coghlan (2nd) and Olivia Zelvis (3rd), while in the breaststroke Abby Mullen finished second and Caela Shay took third. Katie Eagan was also the top Duxbury finisher in back-to-back events, the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.89) and 100-yard freestyle (1:02.70).  Eagan would take second in the fly, followed by Miranda VanDingstee (3rd) and Krista Librett (4th), and also lead the sweep of the freestyle. Finishing the freestyle in second and third were McKenzie Bright and Megan Murray, respectively.

Mullen (5:59.43) returned to the pool in the 500-yard distance freestyle event, and along with Elizabeth Buckley (2nd) and Hannah Hutchinson (3rd), swept that event as well.  Hutchinson (27.78) would also take the gold in the 50-yard freestyle sprint, a second ahead of Caroline McSherry (2nd) and Kassie Sweeney (3rd).

Librett (1:11.16) was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke, leading the Duxbury girls to a 1-2-3 finish. VanDingstee (2nd) and Haley Chatlin (3rd) also competed.  Jess Goldberg (2nd), Bright (3rd) and Lucy Quigley (4th) finished behind their Middleboro opponent in the 200-yard free.

“The girls are fine-tuning themselves for the major meets coming up,” said coach Jay Craft.  “We have three meets the next three weekends and that is what the season comes down to. They’ll be ready.”

Next up for the Lady Dragons is the Patriot League Championship meet on Saturday at the Lincoln-Hancock Pool in Quincy, followed by the South/Central Sectionals at MIT on Feb. 11.
