Win gets Dragons back on track

The Duxbury boys’ basketball team ended its two-game losing streak with a 60-50 win over Pembroke on Friday night in Duxbury.

The Titans came into the game at 5-6 and jumped out to a 7-4 lead three minutes into the action on a Garrett Wetherbee three-pointer, but they lost the lead two minutes later when Duxbury’s senior captain Jason Marino scored off a steal for an 11-9 lead that forced Pembroke Coach Will Seward to call a timeout. During the break Duxbury Coach Gordon Cushing sent in his second unit to pick up the defensive pace and they did just that, as the Titans could not get the ball in play and called another timeout.

“We tried to give them a different look defensively by alternating our starting unit with a pressing unit,” said Cushing. “We’ve been struggling offensively and maybe this is a way to get more pressure and create opportunities.”

After the timeout they were successful and grabbed a 12-11 lead, only to have sophomore Jake Foote bury a pair of free throws that would give the Dragons the lead for good at 13-12.

Senior captain Curtis Owen proceeded to bury two jumpers (23 pts.) and Foote hit another pair of free throws for a 19-12 lead, but Pembroke’s Justin Ogilvie sank a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to keep Pembroke close at 19-15.

Jason and Justin Marino (4) scored to open the second quarter for a 25-17 lead and senior Andrew Scott followed with a three-pointer to grow the lead to 28-17.

The Duxbury bench was hit with a technical with just under two minutes left in the half, giving Justin Ryan a chance to narrow the lead to 28-19. Owen countered with a pair of free throws and Ryan responded with another Titan trey.

The lead grew to its biggest of the half when Justin Marino went to the foul line to make it 34-22, but the Titans sank another buzzer-beater to end the half behind, 34-24.

The third quarter belonged to Owen, as the veteran guard caught fire and scored 11 points, keeping his team’s lead at 10 points (47-37) after the Titans had crawled back within five at 42-37 with 1:28 remaining.

While the 10-point lead looked comfortable for the Dragons entering the final eight minutes, senior Bill Quigg kept the visitors around with six points, forcing Duxbury to call a time out with a 54-46 lead and 4:46 left in the game.

Things got a little testy in the end, as Ryan went to the line on a Duxbury technical and he followed that with a bucket that made it 56-50 with 1:12 to go.

Four straight free throws in the final minute by sophomores Khai Perry and Foote iced the win for the Dragons.

Owen led the way for Duxbury with 23 points, while Justin Marino had 13, Foote scored eight, and Jason Marino added six. Ryan led the Titans with 15 points.

The boys were on the road last night in Hingham and will travel again to Hanover on Friday night for a 6:30 p.m. battle with the Indians.
