The DHS boys’ hockey team improved its record to 1-1-1 with a 3-0 shutout win over Hanover in Patriot League action on Wednesday night at the Hobomock Arena in Pembroke. Outshooting the Indians by a 13-5 margin in the first period, Duxbury took a 1-0 lead with 4:38 left in the period when sophomore forward Nick Marrocco wristed a shot over the shoulder of Hanover netminder Elijah Marciello to break the scoreless tie. Things were quite different in the middle stanza, as the Indians peppered Duxbury goaltender Conor Charland, forcing the senior to make three big saves in a 30-second span to keep the lead safe. “Hanover’s game plan was to spread their wings a little bit and try to get odd-man rushes,” said Blake. “Early on it cost us a few rushes, but this group will get better and better as the year goes on.” Following Charland’s heroics, the Dragons went on the power-play and failed to score, but did a good job of killing the Indians’ power-play less than two minutes later when senior Jeff Gaita took a pass from classmate Fenton McCall and went in alone on Marciello for a shorthanded goal and a more comfortable 2-0 lead. It looked like the Dragons would ice the game in the first minute of the third period, but their 2-on-1 breakout didn’t materialize as they went back on defense in hopes of holding Hanover at bay. Any chance for a Hanover comeback went by the boards with 9:58 remaining, as freshman Luke Stevens, the son of former NHL star Kevin Stevens, put on a move his father would be proud of. Coming out from behind the net to Marciello’s left, the rookie flicked a wrister up and under the crossbar for a 3-0 lead. The Indians would go on the power-play twice in the final seven minutes, but Duxbury continued to push the offense, out-shooting the hosts by a 15-13 margin in the final 15 minutes and walking away with the shutout win. “This is exactly the type of game we needed,” said Duxbury Coach John Blake. “We’ve been working hard, but just haven’t been able to finish. Tonight we were able to put a few pucks away and I think it will help their confidence.” The Dragons will be in action on Thursday night when they play in the second round of the Taylor Tournament at the Pilgrim Rink in Hingham. |
