Boys' swimming off to fast start

The Duxbury boys’ swim team is off to an exceptional start, posting a 4-0 record and heading into the holiday break with the top spot in the Patriot League. Graduating only one swimmer from last year’s team, the Dragons added four freshmen to their 2011 roster. Diving for this year’s team and looking to add points are senior Ryan Scanlan and sophomore Mike Tougas. Leading the Dragons so far this season with state-qualifying times are juniors Ian Wilson and Mike Connolly, who have yet to lose an event between them. The boys took on Pembroke on Tuesday, winning 74-70.  The 200-yard medley relay team of Wilson, co-captain Arthur Su, junior Stephen Tonaszuck and Connolly, started off by blazing to a state-qualifying time of 1:50.88 and taking first. Connolly (2:11.43) would soon return to the pool and capture another State cut in his individual 200-yard medley event.  Following closely behind were Su (2nd) and John Coakley (5th).

Wilson (57.93) would also qualify for States in the 100-yard butterfly, one of his signature events, while sophomore Josh Ng and junior Malcom Edgar took third and fourth, respectively. Ng, proving his expertise in the distance events as well, completed the 500-yard freestyle in 6:00.82, and took first. Also, finishing the 20-length race were senior Keelan Murphy (3rd) and junior Noah Brayer (4th).

Veteran Matt Griffin won twice against Pembroke, splashing his way to victory in the 200-yard (2:15.75) and 50-yard (26.25) freestyle events. He shared the 200 with freshman Coleman Brady (3rd) and Murphy (5th), and the 50 with senior Mason Crane (3rd) and sophomore Sean Healy (6th). The last freestyle event was the 100-yard where co-captain Ben Zelvis (1:00.44) took first and Brady (2nd) and freshman Garrett Chatlin (4th) followed close behind.

Connolly captured another first in his second individual event of the meet; the 100-yard backstroke. He was joined in the pool by Brayer (4th) and sophomore Kevin Coakley (5th).  Both Coakleys would return to the pool in the next event, the 100-yard breaststroke, to finish third and fourth. Zelvis would take second in that event.

The Dragons returned to the Percy Walker Pool on Thursday to take on Hanover, winning with a score of 75-57. The boys swept the relay events and won all but two individual events. Connolly (1:56.50) started the meet in fine form with a win in the 200-yard freestyle. Zelvis (2nd) and Brady (3rd) completed the sweep. Wilson (2:11.81) claimed the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley. He was joined in the event by Murphy (3rd) and John Coakley (4th). Matt Griffin (26.16) just missed taking first in the 50-yard sprint freestyle, getting out-touched by a hair. Freshmen Jared Amado (3rd) and Riley Crane (4th) were soon to follow.

For the second time in a week, Ng (5:59.95) would claim victory in the 500 free, going under 6:00 for the first time this season. Murphy and Brayer also competed in the distance event, taking second and third, respectively.  Soon after Brayer (1:21.53) would hop back in to win the 100 backstroke. John Coakley (2nd) and Tommy Blanchard (3rd) completed the Duxbury sweep.
