| Lady Dragons Roast Porkers in South Sectional Field Hockey |

They came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed behind perennial super power Walpole HS (21-0), with the only chance the two would meet being in the South Sectional final. After wins over Hopkinton, Barnstable and Sandwich, the Lady Dragons (21-1) earned the right to face the No. 1 seed in Taunton where they stunned the unbeaten Porkers, 2-0, to win the Division 1 South Sectional title. They faced defending state champion, Andover High School, later in the week for the eastern Massachusetts title and lost 2-0. Walpole’s well-deserved reputation didn’t seem to scare the Lady Dragons, who pressured the Porkers from the outset and earned two corners in the first 11 minutes, while totaling six in the first 30 minutes. With 8:08 left in the first half Duxbury struck for what turned out to be the game-winner when freshman Lily Smith deflected a Cory Connolly shot past goalkeeper Katie Kelley for a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later the pressure seemed too much for Walpole as Kelley smothered the ball on one of the half-dozen corners, forcing a penalty stroke. Connolly got the call and calmly flicked her shot past a diving Kelley to the left side of the net. “We’ve been working on strokes since the tournament started,” said Coach Pam Manley. “We said strokes can be a big part of tournament games, especially if you go into overtime. Cory has been working on that because placement is very important and it showed today.” |
