Lady Dragons battle No. 1 seed in soccer
Wednesday, November 09, 2011 11:17 AM

Just like the boys’ team, the girls’ soccer team won its first-round game with a 2-0 blanking of Apponequet on Monday night in Duxbury, earning them their own meeting with No. 1 seed East Bridgewater on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in East Bridgewater.

EB comes in at 17-1-2 and should have its hands full with Duxbury, who put on an amazing performance in the first 30 minutes of the win over Apponequet.

“I thought that was one of the best 30 minutes we have played all year,” said Coach Emerson Coleman of his team’s first-half play. “We were unbelievable. We had the other team on their heels. I think going forward that the girls need to know they have to finish those chances that we had.”

It didn’t take long for Duxbury to assert itself, as speedy junior Laura Nee beat Apponequet goalkeeper Abigail Couto to a loose ball and slid her shot along the ground and into the right corner of the net for the eventual game-winner.

Nee’s goal seemed to ignite the veteran forward, as she went in alone on goal three more times in a four-minute span before finally notching her second goal with 18:53 left in the half.

Holding a 2-0 lead to begin the second half, the Lady Dragons still held the Lakers at bay by keeping the ball in the Apponequet end and earning several corners in the process.

Outstanding defense by senior co- captains Madi Lawson and Lily Peterson stifled the Laker comeback bid, while senior Jen Gerraughty was outstanding in net.

“Madi never made a mistake,” said Coleman. “Everything she touched was clean, and Sarah Jones did a great job covering their top scorer. This was the first tournament win for many of these kids and they had plenty of emotion going into the game. They just have to keep it up for a full 90 minutes as we progress.”
