After winning the MIAA South Sectional title last week at the Easton Country Club, the Duxbury boys’ golf team will see its chance at a third straight Division II state title delayed because of this past weekend’s surprise snowstorm. Originally scheduled for Monday morning at the Hickory Ridge Golf Club in Amherst, the MIAA had the foresight to postpone Monday’s championship tournament when they saw the long-range forecast calling for snow. With many eastern Massachusetts teams expected to arrive on Sunday in preparation for Monday morning’s 10 a.m. shotgun start, it appears to have been a wise move by the MIAA board, as the Amherst area was inundated with close to 10-15” of snow with downed trees and power lines over the weekend. “I’ll be surprised if they decide to hold it out there,” said Duxbury Coach Jack Stoddard. “It was an extremely wet course even before the snow came. It’s the type of course where you have to keep your ball in play and we won’t have any time to get in any practice rounds.” It was expected that the MIAA would meet on Monday to decide at what venue to hold the championship. But unfortunately the Clipper sports section went to press on Monday morning before that decision had been made. As for his chance s at winning his third straight title, Stoddard was cautiously optimistic. “We were the low qualifier at the Sectionals and we did it without counting our No. 1 and No. 3 player’s scores,” said Stoddard. “We’ve been kind of a Jekyll and Hyde type team this year. When our top players haven’t done well, our lower rated players have come through for us. Those kids have gained a lot of confidence. If they stay focused and we get good play from our top players, which I expect, we’ve got a good chance of repeating.” Having beaten Sandwich by five strokes in the Sectionals at Easton, Stoddard views the Blue Knights as possibly their toughest competition, along with Franklin, Masconomet, Concord-Carlisle, and Wellesley. |
