Dragons have sub-par performance
Wednesday, October 26, 2011 11:34 AM

The Duxbury boys’ golf team had a strange week, as they were convincingly beaten by Hanover, 244-269, destroyed Middleboro, 234-299, and then succumbed to Barnstable, 220-235, in a match shortened to eight holes due to darkness.

The loss to Hanover appeared to be a shocker, but it wasn’t in the eyes of Dragons’ Coach Jack Stoddard.

“If you have never played the Harmon course, it can be real tough for a first-time player,” said Stoddard. “Our kids were using drivers on every hole and ended up in the woods, while their kids were using 7-irons most of the time.”

Sophie Morrell led the way for the Indians with a round of 38, while Jake Handy was right behind at 39 to lead Hanover.

Duxbury was led by Nick Drago, who fired a 40 with six pars, while Cam Daley (two pars), Jack Ball (one par), and James Mattes (three pars) all carded 44s. John Higgins (45/one par) and Curtis Owen (47/two pars) completed the Duxbury scoring.

“That’s a good team Hanover has,” said Stoddard. “They can give anyone a tough time in the Division III tournament.”

It was a complete turnaround against Middleboro, as the Dragons returned to their home course at the DYC and shot six sub-42 rounds, while Middleboro’s Lucas Szulak was the only Sachem with a sub-50 round at 48.

Bob O’Brien had a spectacular round with eight pars and a birdie in fashioning a 35, while Drago (a birdie and five pars), Owen (a birdie and seven pars), and Jeff Gaita (a birdie and five pars) all shot 39s. Mattes (41/five pars) and Pat Gearin (42/a birdie/two pars) completed the Dragons’ scoring.

On Thursday the Dragons entertained Barnstable on the Indian Pond course in Kingston where Mother Nature intervened and cut the match off after eight holes due to darkness.

Curtis Copley and Sal Visali shot 32s for the Red Raiders, while Duxbury could only counter with O’Brien’s 34 (six pars) and Daley’s 37 (a birdie / three pars). Barnstable also got a 36 from Donnie Brodd and three rounds of 40 to complete the 226-235 victory.

Mattes (39/three pars), Ball (40/a par), Drago (41/five pars), and Owen (40/ a par) finished off Duxbury’s scoring.

The team will end its regular season schedule on Wednesday afternoon when it takes on Hingham at the South Shore Country Club in its final Patriot League battle.
