Tough love seems to be the answer
Wednesday, October 26, 2011 11:32 AM

Though the words may have sounded harsh,  Coach John Tocci’s point came across loud and clear last week, as his boys’ soccer team bounced back from a pair of sub-par performances to knock off North Quincy (2-0) and upset Hingham (2-0) at the beginning of a five-game homestand to end the regular-season schedule.

Goals by seniors Tim Gavin and Wilson Powell raised the Dragons’ record to 7-4-3 after the win over North Quincy, with four games remaining to reach the .500 mark and qualify for the playoffs.

Competition for that one victory couldn’t have been any tougher than having to face off against league favorite Hingham. But they say defense wins championships and with Patriot League MVP Justin Marino in net, it’s all they needed, as the senior consistently stopped Hingham’s continuous pressure with 17 saves.

“That was a phenomenal effort by Justin,” said Tocci. “Hingham was obviously the better team. They have three forwards up front that are studs. They don’t have any weak links on that team.”

Goals by junior Max Cook and freshman Matt Sharpe’s first goal of the year was all the Dragons needed to compliment Marino’s magic.

The boys will host Franklin on Thursday afternoon at 4:15, and return to Chandler Field on Tuesday night for their regular-season finale with Plymouth North at 6 p.m.
