| Field hockey in title battle vs. Scituate |

The Duxbury girls’ field hockey team will go after its third straight Patriot League title on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts the Scituate Sailors at 3:45 p.m. Scituate remains a half game back of the Lady Dragons and a win or a tie by Duxbury would clinch the crown. The Lady Dragons recorded a pair of wins last week to raise their record to 12-1 with two league games of the six remaining. Goaltender Sophie Fitzpatrick registered her tenth shutout of the season in last Monday’s 3-0 win over Marshfield and got stellar support from the front defensive trio of senior Caroline Phinney and sophomores Ally Hammel and Caroline Shaunessy, along with the low defensive duo of junior Kathryn Nutter and freshman Meredith Wright. Two days later they followed that with another convincing win (4-1) over annual Patriot League nemesis Hanover. After allowing the Indians to grab a 1-0 lead in the first ten minutes of the game, Coach Pam Manley called a timeout in order for her squad to regroup. “Our girls are every skilled, but we have a tendency to start off slow when on the road,” said the Duxbury coach. “The girls pointed out themselves what they needed to correct and went right back out there and scored less than two minutes later on a Katie Smith goal to tie the game at 1-1.” Getting back to their normal playing style when the second half started, the Lady Dragons took a 2-1 lead on a Phinney direct hit off a corner and league scoring leaders Cory Connolly and Hannah Murphy finished off the Indians with a pair of insurance goals. Midfielder Martha Findley continued her quiet, but effective defensive play in keeping Hanover at bay the rest of the way. |
