It took just 11 games for the Duxbury field hockey team to qualify for postseason play, as they got sweet revenge with a 3-0 thumping of Hingham on Friday afternoon in Duxbury.

Having lost to the Harborwomen (1-0) early in the season, the Lady Dragons were determined to avenge the only blemish on their record (10-1) and they did it convincingly, dominating play throughout the afternoon and holding Hingham without a shot for the entire game.

Duxbury wasted little time in jumping all over the visitors, as play stayed in the Hingham defensive zone for the first 12 minutes of the game.

Just over four minutes into the contest, the Lady Dragons jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Molly Zaverucha converted a Hannah Murphy pass that seemed to take the steam out of Hingham right away.

Grace Nissi made a great rush up the right wing a minute and a half later and split a pair of Hingham defenders, feeding Murphy for a 2-0 lead.

Duxbury’s domination continued, as they held an 8-0 advantage in corners and a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The second half wasn’t much different, as the Lady Dragons pressed the issue with repeated advances into the Hingham end.

At the 18-minute mark sophomore defender Caroline Shaunnessy hit the post with a wicked shot from 10 yards out and the Duxbury offense continued to pressure Hingham netminder Hope McDonald. They finally scored with 12:35 left in the game when Caroline Phinney beat McDonald when her shot deflected off a Hingham defender for the final Duxbury tally.

“My girls just seem to have more confidence when they play at home,” said Coach Pam Manley. “We were aggressive right from the opening face-off and we attacked the net. I think scoring those two goals early eliminated any nervousness we had and we were able to capitalize by being productive on their turnovers.”

The girls get back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Hanover, followed by a road game on Friday afternoon at Silver Lake and a Saturday morning home game with Marshfield.
