The Duxbury girls’ cross-country team beat Silver Lake last Friday afternoon on its 3.0-mile course, 23-36, evening its record at 2-2.

It was a rainy day for the race that was dedicated to Lt. Tim Steele, a former Duxbury boys’ cross-country runner and team captain, who recently died in the line of duty in Afghanistan. The Duxbury runners wore temporary tattoo/washable markers of the American flags on their arms in remembrance of Steele. A portion of the grass course was painted with four small flags outlining his name. Some members of Steele’s family were in attendance for part of the race.

Senior Captain Lauren Bittrich made it a successful day for the Lady Dragons, winning the race with a time of 21:52. SL’s Ally Glalandzi (23:31) took second and was followed by Duxbury senior Kara O’Leary (24:13) in third and senior captain Caroline Manning (24:16) in fourth.

Silver Lake matched that with fifth and sixth-place finishes by Michelle Kearney (24:21) and Hadley 24:41, but it was all Duxbury after that, as the Lady Dragons took the next four positions with junior Caroline Bittrich (25:04) in seventh, junior Rachel Button (25:51) in eighth, junior Emily Mutkoski (25:51) in ninth and junior Julie Weiss (25:52) finishing tenth.

The Lakers captured 11th (MacKenzie Bowden, 25:57) and 12th (Allison Supple, 26:09) with Duxbury taking the next three positions; 13th sophomore Jackie Hanrahan (26:42), 14th freshman Rosie Doherty (28:10) and 15th senior Christine Doherty (28:35).

The victory followed last Tuesday’s tri-meet split with Pembroke and Middleboro in which the girls lost to Pembroke, 19-41, but were able to out-distance Middleboro, 26-31.

Bittrich (20:42) took second-place in a race dominated by the Titans, while O’Leary finished 10th.

Next Tuesday the girls will travel to Hingham to take on the Harborwomen in Patriot League action.
