After a pair of frustrating games to open the season, the Duxbury boys’ soccer team is off and running while extending its unbeaten streak to four games after Friday afternoon’s 1-1 tie with Silver Lake.

While Coach John Tocci had some concerns about his team’s ability to score goals, those issues seemed to have been resolved during the streak when they beat Scituate (4-0), North Quincy (4-0), and tied the Lakers.

With the offense coming around, it takes most of the pressure off the Dragon defense that has been stellar in its first six games, allowing just two goals and registering four shutouts.

“I probably have the best goalkeeper (Justin Marino) and pair of fullbacks in Eastern Mass right now,” said Tocci, explaining his team’s strength.

Following their first win of the season over Quincy (3-0), the Dragons exploded for a win over Scituate and it could have been even bigger according to Tocci.

Senior captain Brendan North got his team going with an early goal versus the Sailors and classmate Aidan Garrity scored an insurance goal later in the half.

Senior Tim Gavin opened the scoring in the second half for a comfortable 3-0 lead, allowing Tocci to clear his bench and give sophomore Calder Stames a chance to score his first goal of the year in the win.

The victory gave the Dragons plenty of momentum going into Thursday’s game in Quincy with the Red Raiders, but it didn’t seem to kick in until the second half.

Showing nothing for their 15-shot effort in the first 45 minutes, the Dragons finally broke the drought five minutes into the second half, as senior Chase Mohrman scored his first goal of the season to open the floodgates for the Duxbury offense.

Garrity, Jason Marino and Stames would follow with goals of their own for the team’s third Patriot League win, creating the perfect preparation for Friday’s showdown with Silver Lake.

Picked by Tocci to be one of the Patriot League powers, the Lakers had a hard time getting their offense going, as the Dragons defense stymied SL’s kick-and-run game throughout the first half.

“In all the years I have been coaching I have to admit that was the first time I saw a Silver Lake team back on its heels,” said the Duxbury coach. “We had control of the game.”

Gavin’s goal at the 11-minute mark gave the Dragons a hard-earned 1-0 halftime lead that stood up until late in the game when the Lakers got one by Marino with five minutes to go.

“These kids came out and played hard and I’m really excited about the way we are playing right now,” said Tocci.

The team’s biggest challenge of the young season will come on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to arch-rival Hingham for an important Patriot League battle at 4 p.m.
