Volleyball scores first win
Wednesday, September 21, 2011 11:29 AM

It didn’t take the DHS girls’ volleyball team very long to win its first varsity game, as they shutout Rockland, 3-0, last Friday afternoon at home.

After opening its season against powerhouse North Quincy and absorbing a 3-0 loss, the Lady Dragons returned home on Wednesday to face Silver Lake in another Patriot League battle and suffered another 3-0 defeat.

The Lady Dragons played tight in their opener, but showed improvement in every game, losing to the Red Raiders, 11-25, 14-25, 17-25.

The girls were far more relaxed when they took on the Lakers on Wednesday and showed lots of skill, but were hindered by inexperience.

The blocking up front from juniors Michela North and Bridget Quilty kept Duxbury in the game, while freshman Catherine Harrison showed she is a player to watch with her play in the front row. Junior Caroline McSherry showed her all-around skills, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the three-game loss (21-25, 18-25, 20-25).

Now that the butterflies were out of their system and the players were settled into their positions, the Lady Dragons displayed strong team play in the 25-23, 25-12, 25-16 win over Rockland.

Sophomore Kelly Dame continues to provide team leadership and strong setting to all hitters, while Cara Vetsch led the team with five service aces.

Coach Pam Thomas is happy with what she has seen so far.

“The team is quickly learning play tactics and as a whole has a never-give-up attitude. I am so proud of the girls’ achievements and progress,” said Thomas. “We are all very excited to see what this season will bring.”
