Golfers back to winning ways
Wednesday, September 21, 2011 11:28 AM

After a season-opening loss to Division 1 Xaverian (235-246), the Division 2 defending state championship DHS boys’ golf team reeled of three straight Patriot League wins last week over Pembroke, Scituate and North Quincy.

The week started with a home match with Pembroke at the DYC course and the Dragons went home victorious with a 236-259 win over the Titans.

Junior captain Nick Drago (4 birdies/one par) shot a 37 to lead the Dragons, while senior captain Cam Daley was close behind with a round of 39 (6 pars). A trio of Dragons shot rounds of 40 and they included: juniors Jack Ball (one bird/3 pars) and James Mattes (one bird/3 pars), along with senior Pat Gearin (2 birds/3 pars). Senior captain Curtis Owen (5 pars) completed the scoring with a round of 41 that matched Pembroke’s low score of 41 by Pete Camerling.

Despite playing its second round of golf in 24 hours, the Dragons pulled off the lowest score in the team’s history with a 224-270 blowout of Scituate.

Daley (3 birdies/4 pars) led the way with a blistering round of 35; while Owen (2 birdies/4 pars) and junior captain Bobby O’Brien (8 pars) were two strokes behind at 37.

Mattes (7 pars) came in with an outstanding round of 38, while Gearin (one birdie/4 pars) fired a 39, making it the first time in the history of the program that all six scorers shot in the 30s.

It was the perfect situation for a letdown the following day when the team travelled to North Quincy to take on the Red Raiders, but Duxbury’s depth was on display as O’Brien (2 birdies/5 pars) carded a match-low round of 34 to lead the way in the 220-279 victory.

Everyone else was just as effective, as Drago (one birdie/6 pars) shot a 35, Daley (an eagle/2 birdies/one par) carded a 36, and Ball (one birdie/5 pars) came into the clubhouse with a 37. Mattes (6 pars) also finished with a 37 and junior John Higgins (3 pars) shot a 41.

After yesterday’s match with Hingham, the Dragons will play host this week to Whitman Hanson and Silver Lake, as they try to extend their unbeaten streak.
