| Dame impresses in rookie season |

While the girl’s tennis team continues its impressive run with a 9-3 record, one player that has shown consistency every match has been freshman Kelly Dame. With easy wins over Pembroke (5-0) and Silver Lake (4-1), Dame was the lone bright spot in the only loss of the week to Notre Dame; 4-1. The girls barely broke a sweat in the shutout of Pembroke, as No. 1 singles player Michaela Dowd blanked Lauren Sargeant, 6-0/6-0, followed by a 6-1/6-2 win at No. 2 singles by senior Casey Reinhart over Lisa Higgins. Dame was just as solid in a 6-0/6-1 victory over Gina Petrie at No. 3 singles. Juniors Nicole Hanrahan and Caroline Phinney had to work a little harder in their 6-4/6-4 win over Elise Famigletti and Kim Higgins at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Meghan O’Neal and freshman Brooke McCarthy took care of Tamara Mitchell and Karen McCarthy, 6-2/6-2. The girls had a much tougher time with the Lakers, but still prevailed in winning four of the five matches in two sets. Dowd was a 6-3/6-1 winner over Taylor Grifa and Dame handled Haley Peron 6-4/6-2. Phinney teamed up with Lilly Weil for a 6-1/7-5 (7-6 tiebreaker) win at No. 1 doubles, while O’Neal and Hanrahan were 6-3/6-4 victors at No. 2 doubles. While the overcast skies didn’t seem to affect the play of the Lady Dragons earlier in the week, bright sunny skies on Friday seemed to put the girls in a different frame of mind. Dowd and Reinhart had their problems at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, as Dowd lost to Grace Bicianas, 0-6/3-6, while Reinhart dropped her match to Nicole Hayes, 1-6/1-6. Being down 2-0, Duxbury still had a shot after Dame kept those hopes alive with a 6-2/6-4 win over Julie Rhonstock at No. 3. It was now up to both doubles teams to pull this one out of the hat. After a 2-6 loss in the first set, Phinney and Weil rallied to knot the score at 1-1 by beating Meg Garron and Meg Golden, 7-5. A tense third set (6-4) went to Notre Dame to lock up the win. After O’Neal and Hanrahan knocked off Hannah Pagalucci and Spencer Field, 7-5, in the first set, the Notre Dame duo came back with a 7-5 win and a 10-6 tie-breaking win in the third set to end the match. With six games left on the schedule, the Lady Dragons need just one more win to qualify for postseason play. They get that chance this week with matches against Whitman-Hanson, North Quincy, and Hingham. |
