Girls’ tennis keeps pace with boys
Wednesday, May 04, 2011 11:17 AM

It appears the girls’ and boys’ tennis teams are in a battle to see who can keep an unbeaten streak going the longest.

Just like the boys, Coach Jutta Rossano’s squad registered a hat-trick last week with shutout wins over Carver, Whitman-Hanson, and Quincy

Senior captain Michaela Dowd earned a hard-fought two-set win over Caroline McCarthy 6-3/6-3, while fellow captain Casey Reinhart beat Casey Armanetti, 7-5/6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Freshman Kelly Dame continued her impressive run with a 6-0/6-1 victory over Brooke Pierce.

No. 1 doubles saw junior Lilly Weil and junior Caroline Phinney defeat Jesse Crowley and Shannon Howard, 6-1/6-4, while sophomore Meghan O’Neal teamed up with freshman Brooke McCarthy for a two-set tie-breaker win over Lauren Flackton and Rachel Wilkins, 7-6 (7-2)/7-6 (7-4)

It didn’t seem to bother the Lady Dragons that they had to take the court 24 hours later when they traveled to Whitman-Hanson and blanked the Panthers rather easily.

Dowd took care of  Krista Mielbye at No. 1 singles, but it took the senior three sets before winning, 3-6/6-3/6-1. Reinhart also was forced to go three sets, beating Victoria Consolini, 6-7/6-3/6-3.

Dame seems to have established herself as one of the top No. 3 single players around, as she easily took care of freshman Gabrielle Paulson, 6-0/6-2.

Weil and Phinney made quick work of Brenna Jackson and Alyssa Hayes, 6-1/6-1, while the No. 2 doubles duo of O’Neal and McCarthy beat Mary Rose Griffin and Michaela O’Neil, 6-3/6-1.

The girls returned home on Friday and the winning streak continued, as Dowd took care of Stephanie La, 6-1/6-1, while Reinhart defeated Cattien Tran at No. 2 singles, 6-2/6-2.

Dame made it look easy at No. 3 singles, shutting out Rachel Smith, 6-0/6-0.

Weil and Phinney triumphed over Fanny Zhou and Christine Tran, 6-4/6-1, and O’Neal and McCarthy had little trouble with Angie Li and Kathleen Conroy, 6-0/6-0.

The road gets a lot tougher for the girls this week with four matches in five days, the final two coming at the end of the week when they travel to Marshfield on Thursday and return home on Friday to take on Hingham in a Patriot League match.
