The DHS boys’ tennis team continues to show it is a powerhouse in eastern Mass. high school tennis when it posted three more 5-0 shutout wins over Hanover, Whitman-Hanson, and Quincy in Patriot League action last week, raising its record to 5-0.

After taking care of Hanover, the Dragons rolled along with an easy win over Whitman-Hanson. Leading off for the netmen was junior Pete Muncey at No. 1, who was off the court quickly with a 6-0/6-1 win.

“Pete is showing how good he has become at this game,” said Coach John Bunar, who had his junior move up to the top slot replacing Brayden Minahan for the W-H match.

Junior Connor O’Keefe moved up to No. 2 and had little difficulty dispatching his opponent in a 6-0/6-0 route.

Freshman Harry Sohmer took over the No. 3 slot in his first varsity match and showed no signs of nervousness, as he was surgical in a 6-1/6-1 win.

“I was happy to see Harry play so darn well,” said Bunar. “The three freshmen we have on the team are very good players and getting better by the minute.”

At first doubles, the duo of Kevin Coakley and Eric Schneider continued their undefeated ways, as they handily won their match 6-0/6-2, while sophomores Dan McHugh and Matt Abbott won an easy first set 6-1, but fell behind 4-1 in the second set before righting the ship and taking the set in a 7-1 tie-breaker.

The week ended just the way it started with another 5-0 shutout, this one against Quincy, as Brayden Minahan took down tough junior Kevin Patterson, 6-2/6-3 with a dominating backcourt game.

Muncey was never challenged at No. 2 singles in a 6-1/6-0 win, improving his personal record to 5-0. Doing the same was O’Keefe, who was off the court in short order with a 6-1/6-1 breeze.

The doubles team of Coakley/Schneider played their best match of the year in a 6-0/6-1 win, while Will Triebel and Willy Kingsbury are proving to be rock solid at No. 2 doubles, as they handled their opponents 6-1/6-1.

“Today we showed we can move and cause discomfort in doubles. If we can combine that with some experience and creative shots, our doubles teams will complement our strength at singles very nicely,” said Bunar.
