Harbormen pin down Dragons
Tuesday, January 18, 2011 03:49 PM

It was a case of David vs. Goliath last Wednesday night in Duxbury when the Dragons played host to Hingham in a Patriot League dual meet.  Boasting 46 wrestlers on their roster, the Harbormen have plenty of depth, and are solid in every weight class.

Starting the night at 112, the Dragons had no one to take the mat against All-State Champion Mike Mui, and took the forfeit.  Another forfeit at 119 and a pin at 125 had the visitors off to an 18-0 early lead.  It looked like it was going to be a long night for a banged-up Duxbury squad that has three first-year wrestlers in their starting line-up.  However, sophomore Jake Genereux got the Dragons on the board with a second period pin of Hingham’s Billy Weden in the 130 lbs. weight class, giving the hosts some life.

However, Hingham would take advantage of Duxbury’s inexperience in the middle of the line-up, and recorded four consecutive pins for a commanding 48-6 lead. But the Dragons roared back, winning the last four weight classes to the delight of the large student fan base on hand.

Senior captain Alec McKenzie came out fired up and took it to Hingham senior captain Brandon Kim in the 189 lbs. match-up.  McKenzie never looked back after getting the first take down en route to an 8-0 major decision.

Junior Bobby Boyle had the most entertaining match at 215 against Hingham senior captain Joe Centurelli.  Boyle registered two takedowns, a reversal, and an escape to secure a 7-3 decision, and more importantly, gave his team the spark they needed to make the match respectable.

Sophomore Owen Grey did not disappoint in his heavyweight contest that was aided by the absence of Hingham senior heavyweight Griffin Veldran.  Grey pinned his back-up with a cradle in 27 seconds, giving Duxbury another six points.

Sophomore Nick Kates had his hands full with Hingham’s Charlie Ward in the 103 lbs. weight class, but was able to hang on to a 4-2 decision.  The win gave Duxbury their fifth match of the night, but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the early deficit, and Hingham went on to win 48-22.
