Boys swimmers sweep
Tuesday, January 18, 2011 03:38 PM

The boys’ swim team started the week in stylish fashion by winning every event in a victory over Randolph.  They got off to a great start with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as teammates Steven Kravitz, Barry Su, Ian Wilson and Keelan Murphy finished with a time of 2:04:18.

Wilson placed first in the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard butterfly.  In the 200 IM, Wilson (2:13:25) out-touched senior Barry Su by less than half a second, while Ben Zelvis came in third.  Zelvis placed second in the 100 butterfly behind Wilson, with freshman Josh Ng coming in third.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, brothers Barry and Arthur Su battled for first place, with Arthur just beating Barry with a time of 1:07:10. Sophomore Malcolm Edgar followed for third.  Arthur Su also cruised to first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a State qualifying time of 52:11.  Freshman Kevin Coakley and Mike Tougas finished third and fifth respectively.

Sophomore Mike Connelly had two first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.  Connelly won the freestyle with a time of 1:57:53, with Matt Griffin coming in second and Kravitz in third.  In the 100 backstroke, Connelly was followed by Ng in second.

The 50-yard freestyle was won by Mason Crane in 26:47, while Matt Griffin was second with a time of 28:10 and Kravitz was fourth.

The boys continued to dominate on Thursday against Quincy and were led by Mike Connelly, Arthur Su, and Barry Su with two wins each.  Connelly took first in the 100-yard (52:22) and 200-yard freestyle (1:54:57).  Steven Tonaszuck was a close second, with Josh Ng taking third in the 200 freestyle.  In the 100 freestyle, Connelly was followed by Mason Crane in second and Kevin Coakley in fourth.

Senior Barry Su easily won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:41:25, and Matt Griffin followed in second place.  Su also sailed to first in the 100-yard breaststroke.  Junior Arthur Su just touched out sophomore Tonaszuck by less than half a second in the 200-yard IM.  Arthur took first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00:81) with Ian Wilson a close second (1:01:90.)

Zelvis was a first-place winner in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:07:28.  Crane and Kravitz battled for first in the 50-yard freestyle, with Crane outtouching Kravitz with a time of 26:84. The boys’ relay teams took first in all three relays.

In diving, Junior Ryan Scanlon placed first with Tougas coming in second.

The boy’s team will take on Hanover at home on Jan. 25.
