Defense leads Lady Dragons to upset win

The Duxbury High School girls’ hockey team used a solid defensive effort to beat defending Division 1 State champion, Hingham High School, 2-0 on Wednesday night at The Bog. The win raised Duxbury’s record to 5-1, as they got ready for Wednesday night’s game against Falmouth High School on the road.
Despite goals by Lily and Briana Connolly, it was the team’s defense that earned the number one star, as goaltender Rachel Myette had a relatively easy night thanks to the efforts of defensemen Caroline Shaunessy, Martha Findley, Keri Gould, and Ally Hamell.
The foursome was stellar all night long, as very few Hingham shots got through to Myette, and those that did were handled flawlessly.
The first period saw relatively few scoring chances for both teams, but Hingham did have a serious scoring bid less than two minutes into the game as Sarah Schwenzfeier broke in alone from the left side, but was unable to get her shot past Myette.
The Hingham pressure continued a minute later, but once again the defense stood tall, as few shots were getting through on goal, allowing the Lady Dragons to maintain a scoreless tie throughout the rest of the first period.
What had been an error-free first period for both teams, turned around in the second period as Duxbury was whistled for consecutive penalties, giving Hingham four minutes of power play opportunities. Duxbury went on the power play shortly after and Briana Connolly set up Lily Connolly on the left side for a shot that was turned aside by senior goaltender Beth Findley.
Right after Duxbury’s scoring bid, Hingham went on their third power play of the period at the 5:04 mark. Once again the defense kept Hingham off the board and blocked several scoring bids. With two seconds left on the Duxbury penalty, the Lady Dragons scored the game’s first goal when Lily Connolly came out of the left corner and stuffed a shot inside the post past Findley with 3:36 left in the middle period.
It appeared Duxbury would play shorthanded again, as Hingham picked up its fourth power-play opportunity of the game with 2:59 showing on the clock
As they had done all night long, the defense remained staunch as the period ended with the Lady Dragons holding onto a 1-0 lead.
Just 15 minutes remained before one of the biggest wins of the season for the team, and they made it much easier for themselves, as Briana Connolly was all alone in front to knock home a rebound after pressure by Lily Connolly and Hannah Murphy had Findley stand on her toes with save after save just 19 seconds into the period.
The Lady Dragons went into defensive mode for most of the final period and nursed their 2-0 lead until Hingham pulled its goaltender for an extra skater. That strategy failed when the visitors were called for tripping with 1:04 left in the game, forcing them to put another skater back on the ice.
Duxbury had chances with an open net, but couldn’t put another goal on the board.
With seconds remaining, Myette was forced to make a couple of diving saves that protected the 2-0 shutout win.
Saturday night the Lady Dragons had a much easier time with Marshfield, as they jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead before cruising to a 6-0 win.
Murphy scored early for Duxbury, with Shaunessy and Carly Campbell finishing off the first period scoring.
Shaunessy notched her second of the game in the second period, while league scoring leader Lily Connolly (10 goals/8 assists) made it 5-0. Murphy (6 goals/10 assists) scored her second of the night in the third period and is two points behind Connolly for the SEMGHL South Division scoring lead.
