Girls have little trouble with Red Raiders

The Duxbury High School girls’ basketball team improved its record to 5-1 with an easy 55-34 win over North Quincy on Friday night in Duxbury.  It was just the team’s third game in the past two and a half weeks, but they rarely showed any rust, as they raced out to a 9-0 advantage and ended the first quarter with a comfortable 19-4 lead.
Coach Mark Dunn was able to substitute freely from start to finish, with everyone seeing some action in a game the Lady Dragons controlled from the outset.
Six players scored, contributing to Duxbury’s first-quarter lead, while sophomore Michela North and senior Maggie North combined for eight points to start the second quarter when Duxbury built its lead to 27-7 with four minutes left in the half.
A Devon Tsinzo three-pointer and a basket by Shannon McLaughlin grew the lead to 32-9 with less than two minutes left on the clock. But North Quincy’s only serious threat, senior forward Montana McBirney, scored three points to end the quarter as Duxbury walked off the court with a 32-13 halftime lead.
The second half started much like the first, with North scoring four straight points. McBirney countered with a pair of buckets and Tsinzo drained another three to make it 41-17 for Duxbury with four minutes to go in the quarter.
Sophomore Christina Curley scored her first hoop of the game with under three minutes showing on the clock, and McBirney continued to carry the load for the Red Raiders, scoring their final four points for a 43-24 deficit with eight minutes left in the game.
Dunn brought in a new quintet for the fourth quarter and they immediately grew the lead, thanks to senior guard Jenna Cusick, who scored five points in the first four minutes to give the Lady Dragons a 50-26 lead with just over three minutes left in the game.
Dunn got great distribution in the scoring column from his team, as Norton led the way with 13 and North added 12. Cusick and Tsinzo added nine each, while McBirney led North Quincy with a game-high 18 points.
After taking on Hingham last night, Duxbury will entertain Marshfield on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.
