Dragons squander lead in loss to B-R
By Mike Halloran
Monday, January 10, 2011 05:28 PM

They seemed to have their act together in the first two periods, but the wheels fell off their wagon in the final 15 minutes of their game with Bridgewater-Raynham on Saturday night at The Bog, resulting in Duxbury’s 2-1 loss to the Trojans.
After playing their last four games to ties, it looked like the Dragons were on their way to a win while nursing a 1-0 lead late in the third period. But an undisciplined style of play took over, costing the Dragons a game that looked headed for the victory column.

“In that third period we got undisciplined,” said Coach John Blake. “As soon as you get undisciplined and things get unglued you really don’t have a fighting chance. We’ve been pretty disciplined all year long, up until that third period tonight, and we started to buy back into what B-R was doing. It didn’t work out well for us.”
It didn’t take long for Duxbury to grab the lead, as junior forward Jeff Gaita was perfectly positioned to take a pass from classmate Hunter Banville, who was behind the net. Gaita collected the pass and immediately went up top to beat Dylan Joyce in the upper left hand corner, giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead at the 12:57 mark.
The Dragons would kill off the first of many power play attempts with 5:37 left in the first period, but lucked out seconds later when a Trojan shot rang off the post behind Duxbury netminder Derek Williams.
Duxbury hoped to increase its lead starting the second period when senior captain Bryan Barry went in alone on Joyce and was stopped. Shortly afterwards B-R went on the power-play. Just 17 seconds after the man-advantage started, Tim Harrison stole a pass and walked in alone on Joyce, firing his shot past the right post and keeping the score at 1-0.
What had been a somewhat calm game through two periods, suddenly erupted in the third period, as the Trojans began to dominate in the Duxbury end.
Consecutive Duxbury power plays were fruitless in the middle of the period and the questionable calls had the B-R bench furious.
B-R finally got a power-play of its own with 4:26 to go but couldn’t capitalize. It didn’t seem to matter, as they continued to buzz the Duxbury net even when the penalty expired. Less than a minute after both teams were at full strength, the Trojans tied the score when senior forward Anthony Hardy kept chopping away at a rebound in front of Matthews and pushed it past the Duxbury goalie to tie the game at 1-1.
It appeared the Dragons were on their way to their fifth tie of the season, but B-R had other ideas.
Buoyed by their sudden success, the Trojans were intent on continuing their attack, and it took just 30 seconds to reap the rewards. With Matt Ives hustling into center ice, he picked up Hardy for a two-on-one, hitting the senior with a perfect pass and sending him in alone to beat Matthews for the game-winner with 2:05 left in the game.
After taking on Sandwich on Monday night, the Dragons now get ready to take on St. Johns of Shrewsbury on Saturday night at 5:15 p.m. at The Bog.
