Wrestlers make statement at W-H tourney

At the Whitman-Hanson Invitational on Saturday, the Duxbury wrestling team proved that they are a tournament-style team. Eight Dragon grapplers placed at the tournament that featured some of the best teams in Southeastern Mass. The strong showing for Duxbury comes on the heels of two more injuries to a team that has one of the smallest rosters in years.


However, despite the decline in participation due to the grueling nature of the sport, and the loss of senior captain Pat Donovan (concussion) and junior Nate Popoloski (tendinitis), third-year Coach Kyle McCarthy was pleased with the overall performance of his team, and their fifth-place finish.
Sophomore Nick Kates, who is fast becoming one of the top 103-pounders on the South Shore, won the championship with a commanding 10-3 victory over sophomore Kevin Wright of Sandwich in the finals. Kates was the No. 1 seed, and despite experiencing some shoulder pain in his semifinal match-up with Southeastern Regional’s Kyle Mackinnon, he hung on to a 7-4 decision.  Earlier in the day Kates earned a pin and a major decision, giving him a perfect 4-0 record on the day.
Senior captain Alec McKenzie also won a gold medal for Duxbury, but unlike his teammate, McKenzie won by default when Marshfield’s top wrestler and Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic football player, Tommy Pomella, had to leave the tournament for personal reasons before the 189-pound final.  McKenzie earned his way to the center ring by winning a 4-0 decision over Southeastern Regional’s Daniel Salvucci after a first round bye, and then pinning Barnstable’s Jordan Kraus in the semis.
Sophomore Jake Genereux, who recorded his 16th win on the young season, placed second in a very competitive 130-pound weight class. Genereux pinned his first two opponents before winning a hard-fought 8-4 decision over Whitman-Hanson senior Mike Garrett in the semi-finals. However, Weymouth junior Steve Hall secured the championship when he caught the Duxbury sophomore in his signature cradle late in the first period. 
Freshman Jim Chappuis and sophomore Owen Grey also had a great tournament for the Dragons.  Chappuis recorded three pins in the 125-pound weight class, and Grey pinned three of his opponents in the 285-pound weight class.  Both wrestlers finished in fourth place.
Senior captain Jamie Auer competed in one of the toughest weight classes in the tournament, but still managed a sixth-place finish at 145, while Brendan Gillis had to settle for a sixth-place finish in the 119-pound weight class after suffering a head injury in one of the consolation rounds. Junior Bobby Boyle had a disappointing end of the day after a good start, and also had to settle for a sixth-place finish at 215.
First-year wrestlers JP Geiger (135) and Lucas Trumbo (152) recorded their first varsity wins for Duxbury, who will next host Hingham in a dual meet on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
