Swimmers enjoy home cooking
Tuesday, December 21, 2010 02:36 PM

The Duxbury High School boys’ swim team is enjoying having a pool to call home this year, as they cruised to a pair of wins last week with three swimmers qualifying for the Division 2 States and a fourth qualifying for South Sectionals.  The Dragons defeated Pembroke, 98-75, on Tuesday and then returned to the Percy Walker Pool on Thursday to take down Middleboro, 99-75.

The Pembroke meet started out with a first-place finish and State cut time in the 200-yard medley relay.  Teaming up for the event were Ian Wilson, brothers Barry and Arthur Su and Mike Connolly, as they finished in a time of 1:50.62; more than 16 seconds ahead of second-place Pembroke. Connolly and Wilson led the team with four first-place finishes between them.

Connolly flew to his first State cut time in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.28, with  junior co-captain Arthur Su taking second (1:57.44) and qualifying for Sectionals in the process. Sophomore James Mattes took sixth.  Connolly qualified for States again in the 500-yard freestyle endurance event.  He cruised to a 5:13.97 ahead of second-place finisher, sophomore Steven Tonaszuck (5:21.44).  The two joined the co-captain Su brothers afterwards to win the 200-yard freestyle relay, just missing the state cut by .3 seconds.

Wilson also qualified for States in the 100-yard backstroke, placing first with a time of 1:00.47.  Junior Mason Crane and freshman Kevin Coakley finished fourth and fifth, respectively.  In the 100-yard butterfly, Wilson also took first, (1:00.66); just missing the state cut time by less than a second.  Freshman Josh Ng finished second and sophomore Matt Griffin followed for sixth.

Tonaszuck made his first state cut, winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2:11.56.  Right behind him was senior co-captain, Barry Su (2:15.18). The sophomore later teamed up with Steven Kravitz, James Mattes and Ng to win the 400-yard freestyle relay. Arthur Su won the 100-yard freestyle in 52:84, making a Sectional cut and missing States by .34.  Crane (2nd) and sophomore Malcolm Edgar (6th) followed behind.

In the closest race of the day, Griffin sprinted to a first-place finish (27.16) in the 50-yard freestyle just out-touching teammate Edgar (27.38). Junior Kealan Murphy placed fifth.  Another win came in the 100-yard breaststroke, where the senior co-captain captured first with a time of 1:10. 16.  Zelvis finished second.

On Thursday, the boys took on Middleboro, racking up more Championship cut times.  Wilson, Connolly and Arthur Su all had two wins a piece, leading the team to victory.  The three, along with Tonaszuck, posted a season-low 3:38.94 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, qualifying for States in style.  Tonaszuck made his second State cut of the season in the 500-yard freestyle distance event, swimming a speedy 5:20.84.  Behind him were Ng (3rd) and Crane (6th).

In the 200-yard freestyle, the co-captain Su brothers finished first and second with Arthur (1:58.87) besting Barry (2:03.13) by four seconds for first place. Sophomore Kravitz was sixth.  In the only sweep of the meet, the 100-yard breaststroke, the Su brothers again teamed up for first and second.  Arthur (1:09.47) prevailed again, edging out Barry (1:10.12) by less than a second.  Edgar placed third.

Wilson flew to victory in the 100-yard butterfly taking first–place in 1:01.53 and Ng was third.  Wilson (1:00.41) won the 100-yard backstroke again, besting his previous State-qualifying time.  Zelvis finished third and freshman Noah Brayer was sixth.

Griffin (27.03) also bested his previous 50-yard freestyle time placing second just ahead of Edgar (29.91). He then placed second in the 100-yard freestyle behind Connolly, who qualified for Sectionals with a 52.97.  Earlier in the meet Connolly won the 200 IM, finishing ahead of Crane, who took second.

The diving team of freshman Mike Tougas and junior Ryan Scanlan took second and fourth, respectively.

The Dragons will continue their season on Jan. 4, when they take on Silver Lake at the Percy Walker Pool.
