Lady Dragons advance to finals
Sunday, November 14, 2010 08:01 PM

It didn’t take long for the Duxbury girls’ soccer team to know it had its hands full Friday night in Scituate when the Dedham Marauders forced Emily Brook to make a key save in the first 90 seconds of its 2-1 victory over the Bay State League entry.

A Dedham free kick forced Brook to deflect a rebound early on, and her teammates took over from there, putting pressure on Dedham goalkeeper Ellen Masalsky with free kicks and a Gavin rocket that scraped the top of the net halfway through the first half.

Gavin’s shot and a pair of corners got the team energized and the kept the pressure on until Gavin launched one of her corners deep across the box, where Lily Peterson drilled it past Masalsky for a 1-0 lead with 9:02 left in the half.

Dedham came out firing to start the second half and hit the post on a free kick, only to have Duxbury counter with a pair of rushes by Emily Gallagher that swung the momentum back toward the Dragons.

Both teams had rushes up the field over the next 20 minutes, but only Dedham scored, as Emily Hill beat Brook to tie the game at 1-1 with 11:10 left in the game.

Overtime loomed as the defenses strengthened, and Duxbury got the break it needed when they earned a free kick with 4:30 to go on the clock. Gavin was lined up on the right wing from 25 yards out to Masalsky’s left. She hit her shot perfectly, as it headed for the top far corner of the net and settled in the back for the game-winner.

Dedham would throw a scare into Duxbury when Jenna Savi hit the crossbar from 25 yards out with 4:00 left in the game.

The win puts Duxbury in the South Sectional final against No. 2 seed Medfield (18-1-2) on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. at Weymouth High School on Pleasant Street in Weymouth.
