The good news is that the girls’ tennis team got into the state tournament and won its first match, 5-0. The bad news is they had to face Scituate for the third time in the second round after having suffered identical 5-0 shutouts to the Sailors during the regular season. Last Friday afternoon Duxbury (No. 15 seed) opened against the No. 18 seed Pembroke Titans and sent them packing in under an hour with a shutout win. Michaela Dowd at No. 1 singles had few problems taking care of Pembroke’s Sarah Winn, 6-1/6-1, while Corey Tucker was equally effective beating Erin Scroggins, 6-2/6-0. Casey Reinhart continued the singles sweep with a 6-1/6-1 win over Maggie Harrington. Julia Allen and Erin Nelson found their match a bit more competitive with Laura McConarty and Lisa Higgins, but they still managed to walk away with a 6-3/6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 doubles tandem of Nicole Hanrahan and Therese Kozmiski easily beat Elise Famiglietti and Gina Petrie, 6-1/6-3. It was a totally different story on Monday afternoon when the Lady Dragons found themselves being blanked by No. 2 seeded Scituate, 5-0. The Sailors came into the game with an 18-1 record and enough confidence to scare the Lady Dragons off the court. Duxbury didn’t back down and put up a solid effort before having its season ended. Dowd dropped her match to Kate O'Connor, 3-6/2-6, Tucker took it on the chin against Caroline Martin, 4-6/2-6, and Reinhart lost her match with Haley Malerbi, 3-6/2-6. IN doubles Nelson and Allen lost to Destanee Ringler and Roisin Sullivan, 2-6/0-6, while Kozmiski and Hanrahan lost to Christina McCourt and Shalyn O’Malley, 1-6/1-6 to finish the season at 10-10. |
