| Gavin bends it like Beckham |

She may not garner international acclaim for her skills on the soccer field, but junior striker Melissa Gavin can sure shoot like those that do. Bending a corner kick around Pembroke goaltender Alex Davis with 20 seconds left in the game, Gavin qualified her team for post season play with a 2-1 win over Pembroke, as the Lady Dragons improved their record to 9-2 with seven games left in the regular season. Both teams were up and down the field all day long in monsoon-like conditions, yet the soggy field didn’t seem to slow down senior captain Caitlin Burke, who gave her team a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the game. While Duxbury seemed to have control of the contest in the first half, its hold on it began to slip as time ticked away. With approximately four minutes to go in the half the Titans tied it up, as junior forward Renee Trudeau chipped a shot to the far post that eluded Duxbury keeper Emily Brook. Momentum seemed to stay with the Titans in the second half, as they tested the Duxbury defense continuously and almost went ahead late in the game when a shot went over the crossbar with Brook out of position. The pressuring Titan offense created an opportunity for the Lady Dragons, as they cleared the ball up field leading to the game-winning corner kick by Gavin. Earlier in the week the team cruised to a 7-1 win over Quincy, as Burke and Gavin netted two goals apiece. On Wednesday afternoon the girls will entertain Scituate at 4 p.m., and then travel to Whitman-Hanson on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. battle with the Panthers. |
