The DHS boys’ golf team is the first DHS squad to win a league title and make post-season play after defeating Hingham High School, 234-243, at the South Shore Country Club on Thursday afternoon. The championship marks the fourth straight league title for the Dragons and their eighth in the last nine years. The boys had already qualified for the South Sectionals to be held at Easton Country Club on Oct. 27. Duxbury was led by Billy Curley, whose round of 37 included a birdie and six pars, while Kevin Kuckuk (a bird/5 pars) and Jonathan Stoddard (a bird/6 pars) were a stroke behind at 39. James Magner also had an outstanding round of 39 that included a birdie and five pars, while Stephan Krall (a birdie/4 pars) and Bobby O’Brien (4 pars) turned in cards with 41. Hingham’s Rick Darst led the Harbormen with a bird and five pars in his round of 38. The previous day the Dragons earned a 24-stroke win over North Quincy, 245-269. It was much easier this time around for Duxbury on its own home course, as they had narrowly edged the Red Raiders by just four strokes back in September. Curley (a bird/3 pars), Curtis Owen (6 pars), and Krall (5 pars) were Duxbury’s top performers with rounds of 40, topping NQ’s Jeff Alsip’s 42. Stoddard’s 41, and rounds of 42 by Magner and freshman Nick Drago completed the Duxbury scoring. In the first of three wins last week, Stoddard shot a dazzling round of 34 that included a pair of birdies and seven pars in a 233-269 wipeout of Whitman-Hanson. Magner (a bird/5 pars) and Krall (a bird/6 pars) turned the course in 38 strokes, while Curley (6 pars/40), O’Brien (5 pars/41), and Drago (3/42 pars) also beat or tied the best Panther scores. Now sporting a 15-2 record, the Dragons face three tough matches this week, as they get ready for the South Sectionals, including a Wednesday afternoon trip to Barnstable to take on the Red Raiders. |
