There was little time to think about a mid-season break, as the DHS boys’ swim team labored through five meets in 10 days, winning four out of five and losing to perennial power BC High. Last week the boys topped Pembroke, 80-61, and Quincy/North Quincy, 97-65. {sidebar id=4} Jamie Morris and Cam Crowell sparked the team against the Titans, winning two individual events each. Morris aced the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.94) just ahead of Drew Cooper. In the 50-yard freestyle, the senior sprinted to first in a 26.19, while Chris Kimball and Lucas Theodosiu also raced the event. Crowell won the 200-yard individual medley a few seconds ahead of Jon Ng, and also took the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle, while Ben Potash and Jason Lijewski completed a sweep of the event. The 200-yard freestyle proved to be a horse race between Ben White and Drew Husted, as both swimmers raced stroke for stroke until the last lap when Husted surged ahead to win the race (2:05.098).{sidebar id=1} Duxbury won all three relays, with senior co-captains Devin George and Andrew Sommer teaming with Hunter Chiasson and Lijewski to win the 200-medley relay, while Husted, Ben White, Ng and Kimball combined to win the 200-yard freestyle relay. Husted, Sommer, Brendan Davidson and Cooper were winners in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Two days later the Dragons topped Quincy/North Quincy, 97-65, as the junior class carried the team to victory, taking top spots in four events and contributing to all the relay wins. Chiasson cruised to first in the 500-yard freestyle, winning by a pool length (5:15.00). He also motored to a win over teammates Ng and Morris in the 200-yard individual medley. Junior Pat Sullivan edged out teammate Potash in the 200-yard freestyle. Davidson got his win in the 100-yard butterfly, as he nosed out Husted and Ng by four seconds (1:04.53) and lopped four seconds off his previous-best time. Other event winners included Crowell in the 100-yard freestyle (57.84) and George, who nipped Andrew Gilmore in the 100-yard backstroke. It was all Duxbury in the relays, as Chiasson, Sommer, White and Ng won the 200-yard individual medley, and Crowell, George, Husted and White won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:47.37). White, Crowell, Husted and Chiasson finished the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Earlier this month the Dragons took six of 11 events in a 76-61 victory over Norwell that included an outstanding performance by Crowell, who won two events and contributed on two winning relays. Crowell won the 200-yard individual medley (2:25:40), topping teammates George (2nd) and Davidson (3rd). Crowell also won the 500-yard freestyle by a pool length, slashing two seconds off his personal best (5:39.88). Husted and Sommer completed the sweep. Morris sprinted to a 26.25 in the 50-yard freestyle, while senior co-captain George stroked to first in the 100-yard backstroke. Husted and Sullivan were second and third, respectively. White chalked up a first in the 200-yard freestyle, but was inched out in the 100-yard freestyle to take second, while Potash and Cooper were third and fourth, respectively. Duxbury won both the 200-yard medley relay (Chiasson, Ng, Sommer and Husted) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (White, Crowell, George & Chiasson), with the foursome of Derek Roth, Sullivan, Duncan Edgar and Ng turning in a great race in the 200-yard freestyle for third. Three days later, the Dragons cruised to an 82-30 lopsided home win over Randolph. Once again it was Crowell’s show, as he won two events, touching first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.65) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.82), and recording a personal-best Sectional time in the event. Sullivan and Andrew Gilmore followed close behind Senior co-captain Sommer qualified for Sectionals in the 100-yard breaststroke (1st), outpacing teammates Doug Rollock and Morris. Other event winners were Husted in the 100-yard freestyle (57.6), Ng in the 200-yard individual medley, and Potash in the 200-yard freestyle. George was the top finisher in the 50-yard freestyle with a second-place finish. George, Ng, White and Chiasson sprinted to a team low in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:45.03), while the Dragons also won the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. It’s always hard to stay up for every meet when you have so many scheduled in such a short time frame, so it was a tough assignment when the Dragons took on BC High during their 10-day ordeal.
Facing one of the state’s most dominant swimming powers, the Dragons turned in a very solid performance against the Eagles before losing, 96-76. Despite the final score, the team turned in several season-low times. Leading off the meet was the Duxbury team of Chiasson, Ng, Crowell and Husted in the 200-yard medley relay. Not only did they battle hard until the final stroke, but also erased four seconds off the team’s previous best and qualified for States (1:51.92) taking second. Second-place finishes were hard to come by, as Husted and Chiasson were the only Dragon swimmers to manage red ribbons in individual events. Husted sprinted to 56.36 in the 100-yard freestyle, with Ng (5th) and Morris (6th) also racing hard. Chiasson motored to second in the 100-yard backstroke (58.47), followed by Crowell and Ike Fontaine. Sommer took a second off his time in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.63), while Davidson erased three seconds off his previous low. Sommer was also the top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke Chiasson (2:10.04) and Ng (2:26.43) also dropped time in the 200-yard individual medley. The race of the day was the 200-yard freestyle, where Ng, Sommer, Morris and White were pitted against three speedy BC High teams. When the splashing was over, Duxbury took third, missing the top spot by less than two seconds. “We are right on schedule as we prepare for the final meets of the season,” said Coach Jay Craft. “Everyone is working hard and it is paying off.” The Dragons now have a lengthy break to rest up before hosting Scituate/Cohasset next Tuesday. |
