YOUR WINGS: Duxbury’s Molly Davis breezes to a first-place finish in
the 200-yard individual medley during the Lady Dragons’ 100-60 win over
Randolph.
Kaitlin Buckley continues to be the best all-around swimmer for the Lady Dragons, as the sophomore posted her sixth State qualifying time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:26.34). She also narrowly missed a State cut time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.03), as she edged out Lauren Wilson in second and senior co-captain Liz Antaya in third. Not to be outdone, Katelyn Coghlan motored to her fifth straight victory in the 500-yard freestyle (5:54.81), while Emily Hutchinson took second, slashing five seconds off her previous best. Coghlan also edged out Molly Davis in the 200-yard freestyle by one second (2:13.28). Amy LaGumina finished fourth. Also winning two events was Sarah Goldberg, who sprinted to a 59.97 win in the 100-yard freestyle and 1:11.09 in the 100-yard backstroke. Julia Allen took second (1:13.31) in the backstroke and Mary Courtney Madigan was third (1:15:22). The divers swept their event with Sam Collin scoring 135.35, and Carly Tillotson edged out Paige Jackson for second by only one point (129.90 to 128.75).{sidebar id=1} Alix Brady erased three seconds off her previous best time in the 100-yard butterfly (1:11.03), as she cruised to a win over senior co-captain Andrea Strand and Melanie Mathieu. A splash-fest in the 50-yard freestyle ended with Hilary Dudley (29.31) touching out Madigan by less than 2/10 of a second, while Laura Nelson finished third. The depth and wealth of talent that Coach Jay Craft has at his disposal was noted by the similarity of times in the 200-yard medley relay. Davis, Strand, Carolyn Blout and Gaby Pipp won a photo finish (2:09.28) over the foursomes of Goldberg, Hutchinson, Maggie Hickey and Dudley (2:10.25), and Buckley, Antaya, Brady and Coghlan (2:10:78). Wells Hunter, Kelsey O’Neal, Anna Brady and Celino won the 200-yard freestyle while Hutchinson, Goldberg, Buckley and Davis won the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Lady Dragons won nine events in their win over Quincy/N. Quincy, including a double win in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles events by Hutchinson Top performances were turned in by Coghlan, who cut a second off her best time in the 200-yard freestyle to place second behind Goldberg, who won the event in 2:09.47. In other action, Buckley zipped to first in the 100-yard backstroke over Pipp, and Strand edged out Hutchinson and Wilson for the win in the 100-yard breaststroke. Antaya won the 200-yard individual medley, and was second in the 100-yard butterfly. A top finish by Kelsey O’Neal landed her a second-place in the 500-yard freestyle.{sidebar id=4} In the relays, Madigan, Strand, Antaya and Brianna Murphy won the 200-yard freestyle, while Buckley, Hutchinson, Goldberg and Davis glided to a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Earlier this month the girls helped build the foundation for their current seven-meet winning streak with wins over Norwell (94-81) and Randolph (100-60). Coghlan and Davis led the Lady Dragons over Norwell, winning two events each. Coghlan powered to a personal best 2:13.31 in the 200-yard freestyle, just topping teammates Antaya and Hickey. The sophomore also glided to a win, outlasting Antaya (2nd) and O’Neal (4th) in the 500-yard freestyle endurance challenge. Davis splashed to a win in the 50-yard freestyle, touching out Pipp and Hickey by only half a second. She also insured a trip to Sectionals in the 100-yard backstroke, as she touched ahead of Hutchinson. Hadley Burnham flipped and twisted her way to score 156.2, easily winning the diving competition, while Collin registered a 147.5 for second. The race of the day featured Buckley in the 100-yard breaststroke, as she pulled away from a tight race after two laps for a photo finish (1:05.85) over Sarah Goldberg. Allen was fifth. Other event winners included Hilary Dudley in the 200-yard individual medley and Goldberg in the 100-yard freestyle. Buckley, Hutchinson, Brady and Davis combined to win the 200-yard medley relay, while Brady, Coghlan, Melanie Mathieu and Blout won the 400-yard freestyle. Lauren Wilson, Hilary Gluskin, Celino and Casey Walker combined to nip out teammates, Nelson, Sarah Trevisani, Kerry Turok and Madigan in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Two days later the Lady Dragons swamped Randolph, 100-60, winning all 12 events, as several swimmers posted season-low times.
Goldberg is turning into a workhorse for the Duxbury team, as the freshman inched out Coghlan, who swam a personal best (2:12.40) in the 200-yard freestyle. She repeated her effort over Coghlan once again when she lopped 10 seconds off her 500-yard freestyle time (5:55.36) to out-touch Coghlan (5:56.35). Murphy completed the sweep in the event. Davis did her job, breezing to first in the 200-yard individual medley ahead of Blout and Celino. The junior also stroked her way to first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:12.63), with Mathieu and Alyssa Baracewicz taking second and third, respectively. The highlight of the meet was sophomore Hadley Burnham’s breathtaking dives that earned her a season-high 171.90 to take first. Tillotson was second (1:43.10) and Jackson took third (131.0). Pipp sprinted to a 1:00.78 Sectional time in the 100-yard freestyle, while Celino erased three seconds off her previous best to take second place, while Carly Spoor was third. Senior co-captain Trevisani touched out Dudley to take first in the 50-yard freestyle, registering a personal-best time of 28.55, and Nelson finished third. Dudley got her blue ribbon in the 100-yard backstroke (1:12.65), while Wilson won the 100-yard breaststroke in a season low 1:20.19. Madigan, Hutchinson, Antaya and Pipp teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay, while Hutchinson, Antaya, Nelson and Celino touched out teammates Goldberg, Coghlin, Murphy and Mathieu for a one-second win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Brady, Amy LaGumina, Spoor and Abigail Dobens won the 400-yard freestyle relay over Nelson, Wilson, Gluskin and Kelly Masgul. “Our team has learned how to swim up and we plan to continue this as we move towards the most competitive part of our season,” said Coach Jay Craft. The girls are now off until next Tuesday when they take on an always-tough Scituate/Cohasset squad at the Percy Walker Pool at 3:30. |
