A look at the team standings shows the Lady Dragons did okay at last week’s State Girls’ Team Golf Championships at the Sterling National Country Club in Sterling.

Placing sixth (422) out of 12 teams was pretty impressive. However, according to Duxbury Coach Jack Stoddard, it might have done more to damage his team’s psyche than help it.

With only 15 girls from the tournament’s 72 golfers scoring rounds lower than 100, it was obvious that the MIAA’s venue selection left much to be desired.

It hardly seemed to bother perennial powerhouse Notre Dame of Hingham, whose Alison Eleey blew the competition away with a round of 76 to lead the Cougars (358) to a 29-stroke win over Westboro (387).

It was Notre Dame’s eighth title in the last 10 years.

The 5,521-yard course was a nightmare for most of the golfers with its hilly fairways, long carry shots, and undulating greens. It sent scores rocketing and made for a very unpleasant morning and afternoon for many of the competitors.

Briana Connolly was the lone Lady Dragon to break the century mark, recording a round of 99 that included a nine on the first hole. While Connolly’s start was certainly a cause for concern, it paled in comparison to many of the golfers who shot double-digit numbers on several holes.

Emma Kellar (105), Kara Falcone (107), and Colleen O’Connor (111) completed the Lady Dragons’ scoring.

Stoddard had another successful season going 9-1 with the Lady Dragons and winning the MASS Bay League South Division Championship along with the league’s Sportsmanship Award. The team’s lone loss came in the season opener against Barnstable when they were shorthanded.

Stoddard was quick to praise the work of his assistants Tom Benoit and John Blake, and was also very appreciative of the contributions made by the Duxbury Yacht Club in accommodating the girls’ team for practice times and matches and becoming part of the school’s championship program.
