Would you rather be the best of the worst, or the worst of the best?
That seems to be the position Coach Jutta Rossano and her Lady Dragon tennis team find themselves in with a 13-4 record and one remaining match with Marshfield before the start of post-season play. Sporting an overall record of 11-2, the girls had to face Scituate and Hingham to start the week and discovered right away those two opponents are in a league of their own. Having been shutout (5-0) by the Sailors in the first week of the season, it was no surprise the Lady Dragons suffered a similar fate last week when they traveled to Scituate. After Michaela Dowd was dispatched at #1 singles by Scituate’s Kate O’Connor, 6-0/6-1, Liza Thomas made a valiant effort at #2 singles, winning the first set, 6-3, but dropping the next two by 5-7/4-6 scores to Caroline Martin. Annie Gluskin also gave it her all in a three-set loss to Destanee Ringler before losing, 3-6/7-5/5-7. “Liza and Annie had their best matches of the year today,†said Rossano. Senior captain Jane Morgan and junior Cory Tucker had their hands full at #1 doubles, losing to Brittney Cangemi and Shelagh Joyce, 3-6/2-6, while the #2 doubles combo of Julia Allen and Charlotte Weil were stopped by Christina McCourt and Heidi Leet, 4-6/1-6. Things didn’t get any easier when the girls hosted Hingham last Tuesday, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Harborwomen. Dowd had a tough time with Roberta Bergstein at #1 singles, losing 0-6/3-6, while Thomas (2-6/1-6) and Gluskin couldn’t win a set (0-6/3-6). Morgan and Tucker did a nice job coming back after losing their first set, 2-6, beating Katie Jacobson and Holly Johnson by identical 6-4 scores to capture the #1 doubles match before a captivated crowd. Hingham’s Becca Centanni and Julia Krumholz knocked off Allen and Weil, 3-6/2-6, to win #2 doubles. The girls returned to second tier play on Wednesday with a 4-1 home win over Silver Lake. Dowd got back on track with a hard-fought 7-5/6-1 win over Taylor Grifa, while Thomas bested Julie Felts, 6-4/6-1. Erin Nelson played #3 singles but couldn’t maintain her first-set effort that saw her win 6-4. Silver Lake’s Carolyn Milne came back in the final two sets to win 3-6/0-6 and take the match. Morgan and Gluskin did a nice job to defeat Jenna Pitts and Sarah Williams, 6-2/6-4, while the #2 double tandem of Allen and Weil beat Julie deGeradon and Hayley Perron, 6-4/6-3. The week ended on a very positive note, as the Lady Dragons shutout Whitman-Hanson, 5-0. Dowd knocked off Krist Mielbye, 6-0/6-3, while Gluskin moved up to #2 singles and beat Molly Kelly, 6-1/6-1. Casey Reinhart got the call at #3 singles on Friday afternoon and took advantage of the opportunity, beating Alison Lonergan, 6-3/4-6 (TB 7-4). Morgan teamed up with Thomas for the first time this year at #1 doubles and the duo clicked instantly by beating Lindsay Clay and Rachel Pellegrine, 6-2/6-1. Allen and Weil continue to dominate at #2 doubles where they beat Loreto Sanches and Alexa Scholfield, 6-1/6-2. After Wednesday’s regular season finale with Marshfield, the girls will wait until next Wednesday at 10 a.m. to learn who their opponent will be in the MIAA South Sectionals. |
