Sailors dominate Herreshoff regatta
Tuesday, May 12, 2009 04:48 PM

The DHS girls’ sailing team blew away the competition and sailed off with the Herreshoff Trophy on Saturday afternoon at Mass Maritime Academy, winning the regatta by 24 points.

Sailing on the pond at the Keith Hartford Sailing Center in Bournedale, the competitors sailed mostly on a triangular windward-leeward course, and by the end of the day were sailing the course twice, with increased winds.

It was bizarre weather for the races, as the day started with rain, saw the sun sneak through at midday, and ended in fog.

Despite the conditions, Duxbury won eight of the 14 races in the two-division set-up. The A Division boat, skippered by Julia Leonard with Alyssa Siefert as crew, posted three wins, along with a second, third, fourth, and fifth-place finish in the seven races.

“Even after having a rough start and fouling in the first race, they came back with great speed and tactics to finish fifth. After that, they dominated the rest of the day,” said Coach Hans Jensen.

The Lady Dragons showed incredible depth in the #2 boat, as Allison Shane and Chelsea Maguire alternated with Hadley Burnham and Morgan Gould. The Shane/Maguire tandem was flawless, as they won all four of their races, while the Burnham/Gould duo won race seven after finishing seventh and sixth, respectively, in races three and four.

“The girls did a great job sailing in the shifty conditions,” said Jensen. “They were all great competitors, sailing clean and fair in constantly changing wind velocity.”

Shane and Maguire sailed the most consistently and were rockets in the B Division.

“They simply could not be beaten,” said Jensen

The most exciting part of the day was the last race in the B Division, as Burnham and Gould made a move to the right side of the finish line and caught a better breeze, wiping out a 150-yard lead by St. George’s and edging out the Rhode Island school at the finish.

“It was great to see these girls sail so consistently, and it's even better that they all made a big impact in the regatta,” said Jensen. “That shows the depth of the Lady Dragons, as well as the entire DHS sailing team.”
