The Lady Dragons qualified for post-season play early last week when they won their eighth straight match, a 3-2 win over Pembroke. Since losing to Scituate in their third match of the season, Coach Jutta Rossano’s squad has walked through its Patriot schedule and holds a 10-1 overall record. However, now comes the hard part of the schedule, and it started with a 4-1 loss to Hingham last Wednesday on the road. Duxbury had its problems against the Titans in singles, as #1 Michaela Dowd lost to Eden Marrano in straight sets, 3-6/1-6, while #2 Liza Thomas had an even rougher time in losing to Nicky Wetherbee, 0-6/0-6. Things reversed themselves at #3 singles where Annie Gluskin made quick work of Erin Scroggins, 6-2/6-0. Duxbury dominated doubles play, as the #1 duo of senior captain Jane Morgan and Cory Tucker blanked Laura McConarty and Maggie Harrington, 6-0/6-0, while the #2 pairing of Julia Allen and Charlotte Weil were equally efficient in putting away Lisa Higgins and Elise Famigletti, 6-0/6-0. Heading to Hingham with a 10-1 record and a bolstered confidence, the Lady Dragons didn’t seem to scare the Harborwomen, who swept the three singles matches to guarantee the win. Quick losses by Dowd to Roberta Bergstein, (0-6/1-6), Thomas to Ali Lund, (0-6/1-6), and Erin Nelson at #3 singles to Katherine Ripple, (4-6/0-6) made doubles a mute point. Morgan and Tucker were the lone bright spot for Duxbury, as they knocked off Holly Johnson and Julia Krumholz, 6-6 (Tb 7-5)/6-1, while the #2 doubles tandem of Allen and Weil dropped a super tie-breaker to Katie Jacobsen and Becca Centanni, (7-5/5-7). Duxbury caught a break in its back-to-back games, beating Quincy, 5-0, on Thursday in the City of Presidents. Dowd took care of Trang Vo, (6 –2/6-3) at #1 singles, Gluskin moved up to #2 and defeated Dola Pepo, (6-1/7-5), while Casey Reinhart made her debut at #3 singles and dominated Jonee Manpon, (6-1/6-0). Doubles continued its winning ways with Morgan and Tucker beating Lyna Pham and Maris Pepo, (6-2/6-1), and Allen and Weil going three sets with Sandy Xie and Selma Gammik before pulling out a (1-6/6-3/6-3) victory. |
